| Re: So, I just bought Counter Strike Today Tip #1: Be prepared to get pwned.. a lot.
Tip #2: Headshots are king.
Tip #3: Make macros for buying your gear, it saves time when the round starts.
Tip #4: Start private servers full of bots for a few rounds per map to get to know each map.
I always sucked at CSS, probably because I only played a few times and was always killed so quick it wasnt fun. But seriously, practice headshots, body armor makes it hard to get a quick kill aiming at the torso.
My biggest tip would be play Team Fortress 2 while you have it for free and see if you'd rather play that. I like TF2 much more than CSS, because even when I was a n00b to the game and died a lot, the stylized art and humor made even dying amusing for a while till I got the hang of things.
Also keep in mind that I wasnt very good with online fps using kb+m untill I played TF2 a lot, so ymmv.

| said by brianiscool :haha wow sad and CS 1.6 came out in 1992 rotfl. 1992? There was barely anything on the Internet, back then. Let alone 3D shooter games on the Internet. Where do you get your information?
Gooseman, who first came up with the Counter-Strike, barely picked up Quake in 1996. Quake is a first-person shooter computer game that was released by id Software on June 22, 1996. After which, he was working on Action Quake 2 mod, the inspiration for Counter-Strike.
Counter-Strike was developed on the GoldSrc engine, a heavily modified Quake Engine. Which Half-Life used and Valve eventually developed into the now familiar Source Engine, used in Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike Source. -- Games - GameTech - S.F.Bay - 新

| My only tip is to format your hard drive to rid it of the filth that is CS. And if you've got TF2 on there, all the more reason. Quickly, before it spreads like a cancerous lesion to all the other games on your hard drive.
Then do yourself a favor and get a real team fortress game like TFC or Quake 2 TF.
Don't waste your time with CS. Too many hacks. Repetetive gameplay. Lame headshots.
The upside to CS is that you'll have time to invent cold fusion or plasma reactors in the time you have to wait between rounds.

The upside to CS is that you'll have time to invent cold fusion or plasma reactors in the time you have to wait between rounds. Don't mind the hater. Its not that bad in actuality. Yes there are hackers, but you're going to find that with all games, and they are easilly avoidable if you pick a server with active admins.
The real issue is the game has been out for 7-8 years and you've got some really really good people playing, so the ones that suck like to immediatly scream hacker, so the problem is alot more about perception than actually hacking.
Repetetive gameplay? How is it any more or less repetitive than TFC or TF2? You got regular cs, gungame, aim maps, fun maps, jump maps, surfing maps, pokemon mods, warcraft mods. The game wouldn't still be this popular without the awesome replayability of it. You'll never be a pro, there's always room for improvement, so if the gameplay suits you its hard to not come back to it.
Really the fact that the game is so old and still has so many people playing can more than make my point for me. It was popular and remains popular for good reason. It involves alot more strategy and stealth than a run n' gun capture the flag type of game, so some patience is required. If you have ADHD then this game probably isn't for you. Depending on how fast you die you might end up with plenty of time inbetween rounds, which actually works in my favor because I smoke weed inbetween rounds, but if thats not your style they do have deathmatch servers.
As far as getting into the game initially..
Learn with the MP5 first. Also don't be scared to die. Its going to happen anyway. I was always a big fan of rushing in head first. Many times its a quick death, but when you take out several opponents it can really get your blood pumping.
Also aim maps are your friend. In the map filter in steam just put a "A" in and check out some maps specifically for practice. Find an aim map with deathmatch and you've got it made. No waiting between rounds to keep on practicing. You might even still be able to find a headshot only server, which turns off all the hitboxes except the head. Great practice!
In conclusion, Ratman probably tried CS and couldn't take the learning curve required to not suck, so don't listen to him.
Edit: I started with 1.2...I'm not cool enough to claim I played during beta...I was actually playing TFC at the time, I hated CS back then too, but it was only based on watching someone else play it. Once I got into it, it was over, I still play 1.6 occasionally, didn't like the feel of CS:S.

| I win at least 50% of the CS rounds I play. That's only once or twice a year when one of my friends convinces me to play it with them.
It makes my fingers and my brain bored.
TFC, along with many other games, occupy my reflexes and strategic skills far more than CS.
And the percentage of hackers in CS far exceeds the percentage in any other game I've played.

| Re: So, I just bought Counter Strike Today You're just a downer man, I respect that you don't like the game, but to come in and tell someone that just bought it they should uninstall it is kind of harsh. Especially considering how many more people play(ed) cs than tfc.
Like I said, I started with tfc, still like it when I can hop on one of the few non-bot servers left running. I didn't come from the Q2 team fortress though, so I'm not a very big fan of TF2.
And I'm gonna call bullshit on TFC requiring more strategy than CS. Especially when you start to talk about competitive CS. Its the same engine, so reflexes really are moot in my eyes. A dude gets into your field of vision and you aim at him. Both games have different guns which require different aiming, but in the end the reflexes required to kill Joe Schmoe is going to be the same.
I'm not going to try to talk you into liking CS, you'll never like it, you've made your decision, but you don't need to come in here with the sole purpous of trashing the game. You can't argue the popularity of the game. The numbers don't lie.
And I can't freakin find the numbers. What happened to the itemized list of steam games with the number of players?
You just said you only play once or twice a year and then you go on to spout about the percentage of hackers...uh...
I play several hours per week and I might, MIGHT, run into one blatant hacker per evening, and since I play on servers with admins they get kicked pretty darn quick. I spent alot of time in a CS community where the Admin/Owner was always the first to yell hacker. He was such a sore loser. It was a steambans server and every demo he'd submit came back negative. And he played for YEARS.
After 8 years of playing this game, I'm sure some of these kids can do some pretty crazy things. I on the other hand have been playing 6+ years and I still suck, but I rarely call anyone a hacker.
That turned out really long. I think you're just trying to bait me Ratman. You might as well be talking shit about my mom, I love this damn game.

The reflex arguments and strategic crap is all subjective for the most part. All I know is that CS is more competitive, if you wanted to game like a pro you pick CS not TF.

| Ratman, I just wanted to let you know, that was the dumbest thing I've ever fucking heard. TFC IS a HALF LIFE mod, so is cs. Which means it is the same reflexes. "That's why I usually win when I play" You had just said that you win 50%, how is that usually win? Which makes you a average or worse player. "And a lot of people like American Idol......do I need to elaborate?" Please do? Elaborate for me the fact that your a worthless piece of shit who dislikes American Idol and CS because you are not talented to do either, sing or play cs. "Lame headshots." Don't be a emo kid just because you get ripped everytime. And I made this account just to tell you how fucking stupid you are.
And btw heres a tip, aim at the upperchest/lowerneck and spray about 2-3 bullets, make sure you pull down on the mouse slowly, and get use to playing at 1.5 sens. helps alot.

| Re: So, I just bought Counter Strike Today You can't really tell someone what sensitivty to use because the windows sensitivty settings also come into play, as well as any custom "logitech" software or whathaveyou. There's also cursor acceleration you should probably have turned off for gaming.

| I've been playing CS 1.6 regularly since September 2003.
I own copies of quite a few PC shooters, including Quake 4, CoD4, and UT3. I've played a considerable amount of TF2 and CS:S, and even Call To Arms. So far, nothing has managed to replace CS 1.6, at least in my eyes.
Going on nearly 5 long, dedicated years of playing (most of that time being competitive play), I can surely say that CS 1.6 will always have a special place in my heart amongst any and all video games.
I only play for about 5 hours per week these days, but the game is still very popular and has an excellent playerbase.
And Valve has done a pretty decent job maintaining VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) over the past few months, and a well-admined server is generally hacker free.
It appears Steam removed the game's statistics from their site ages ago... probably because 1.6 had roughly 8 times the playerbase of some of their newer games, like CS:S. (Last time I saw the stats... maybe 1.5 years ago... CS had 180K concurrent players average in-game).
My advice: practice practice practice. Deathmatch is a great way to familiarize yourself with the game. You get free guns, and no waiting around to respawn. The pace usually isn't too fast either. You'll pick it up quickly.
I don't have much to say in regards to mic spam. Sometimes I disable voicecomm. It is indeed, just spam sometimes. However, sometimes it's not and is occasionally useful.
Good luck! You'll need it. -- QUAD!!!!
