| getting qwest to upgrade my service
hi all,
I currently have Qwest 1.5mbps, which is the fastest available here, service but would like to be upgraded. I want to know how to go about convincing quest to upgrade me to 3+ mbps. I called them once to see if they had an ETA for faster service and they said the lines in my area were not "conditioned" for the faster service.
I am outside of town so Qwest is the only isp, no comcast. I also don't know my distance from the co.
Thank you for any help, Nick |

| Nothing you can really do- they are upgrading a lot of dslams for adsl2+, but it's a time consuming and expensive process, and Qwest has many thousands of dslams.
Even if you're on a dslam that offers 3/5/7M, if you're too far from it to be eligible there isn't much to be done.
About the only thing you can do is get your neighbors to complain as well in order to demonstrate a demand for higher speeds there. |

| reply to user958 Mate, you live outside of a town of about 7,000 people. Rural life is not really supposed to have all the emenities of a big city, is it?
Qwest has little to no monetary interest in upgrading that..in fact you are lucky to have broadband at all.
Sorry if that's harsh sounding, but it's the truth. --

| reply to user958 Well spoken Caffe. I live in an area where a lot of people pride themselves in living in rural areas out of town. E.g.5-40 acres, less people, quiet, nature, and all the other benefits of living out there. Yet, we would find it hilarious when we work in these areas and hear the customers complain about all the things they don't have. No mini-mart near buy; has to drive 15-20 miles for the kids to get to school; high price of gasoline and how much they use; of course that they don't have the same DSL that those in town have. Hell, the best one I heard was from a very rural customer; transplant from California; who was actually complaining to the county sheriff because a bear had come through their yard, as well as deer.
Of course, there's also a lot of legitimate complaints when a local telephone pair gain unit; in town or out; that is fed with fiber, yet Qwest decides to build the dslam next to it and decides to demux T1's for the dslam (Limiting it to 1.5/896, instead of using the available fiber to have a DS3 and offer the higher speeds. Even in neighborhoods with thousands of customers and 3-4 dslams. Can't tell you how many engineers in Denver I fought with arguing how much money they would lose in the future by not putting in and offering the higher bandwidth right from the beginning. It's a lot cheaper than retrofitting it later. Their attitude was to save money today because these are customers that had no service prior, therefor they would be grateful for any service. Even 256kb. Therefor they believed they could spend very little in providing DSL, yet make huge profits. They were wrong, as usual, but didn't care. Later... Mike.... |

Ya, I know, but I just moved from a big city and am used to the faster speeds and was hoping to get qwest to bond the T1s or something |

I wish that would happen, but no one around here is going to make that kind of effort

| You know, I am very addicted to the internet. I do almost everything on it from my banking and investments to purchases, research, etc... Even when I go out of town for a couple day business trip I still bring a laptop and use the motel's internet. However, in the last couple of months, I've had to go on a number of weekend trips with my son visiting his college and the football program. On all 3 weekend trips, I figured we'd be to busy for me to use the internet. I purposely didn't bring the laptop. I have to admit that those were 3 of the best weekends I've spent in a very long time. Spent time with my son, relaxing, watching spring football practices, going to the college orientation, etc...
Higher bandwidths have definitely made the internet a faster and more useful experience. However, there are now times where I wish I lived in an area where dialup was the only available internet. I'd get on the net once a day to do email and once in a while to do some research. AL Gore couldn't even make the internet less addictive when he invented it. How I long for the days gone by. Later... Mike.... |

Dial tone served by an OC-3 or OC-12 (according to an engineer at Qwest who I will not name), but they demuxed it to a T1 for the DSLAM. |

| reply to christcorp Ya know what's funny is I recently had my tv go out on me. So, I started watching my shows online, and the occasional movie. Started doing vids for YT, etc. The interesting part is..after a week of missing the actuall habit of watching the TV...I don't miss it. I even was given a tv..I've maybe watched it 5-6 times since. I just got my DTV converter box for it too...and a geel like me usually wiould pounce on setting up new gear..but it's still in the box. (ok, so I read the manual.. )
My reverse point is that sometimes the internet can be both an addiction AND a freeing thing. I still wish I had green and trees and such AND good Internet..but I'm just lucky to live where I do I figure. Spokane is pretty well wired..and there is a lot of nature around too.

I live outside a town of a few hundred (not in my profile), miles up a dirt road, I was surprised I could get DSL. |
