Gooseman, who first came up with the Counter-Strike, barely picked up Quake in 1996. Quake is a first-person shooter computer game that was released by id Software on June 22, 1996. After which, he was working on Action Quake 2 mod, the inspiration for Counter-Strike.
Counter-Strike was developed on the GoldSrc engine, a heavily modified Quake Engine. Which Half-Life used and Valve eventually developed into the now familiar Source Engine, used in Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike Source.
