Just speculating but it seems like all of the carriers except for sprint are going with LTE -- I imagine they will just have one uniform network at that point where others can roam if roaming agreements are in place.

Cortland, IL		 This has been mentioned in all the other LTE vs WiMAX discussions. LTE is going to be used for data-only. While it could lead to a GSM upgrade later on, voice will remain on the respective CDMA and GSM networks and only data will be on LTE.

Hingham, MA		 There'd be no reason to convert from CDMA to GSM- it'd be a downgrade in voice quality anyway. LTE is supposed to have voice over VoIP-based systems, which are much cheaper than current cellular voice technologies.

Its not like that LTE is the family of GSM. Called 3gpp. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3gpp
Plus both cdma and GSM are old school. What has to happen is Alltel moved to a GSM core first then to LTE.
