Spam calls from spoofed CID

I have been receiving many calls on one of my cell phones re car warranty about to expire, all from different CID.
Just got the first one today on my primary cell phone and hit 1 to be put through. Usual stuff bla bla, no interest drop the call.
So, I would like everyone who has got these calls and all the responsible VoIP companies to join this thread and do your bit to stop this harassment.
End users who have got these calls can provide CID and time, VoIP companies can research if THEY have been used to make these calls and put an end to the user.

How about it ?

See? this is why we don't let users set their own CID by default....

But yeah.. it would be incredibly hard to trace back the origin of these calls. I'm afraid as more and more spammers catch the idea, phone spam will become just as big a problem as email spam.

Might take a while though.

I've been meaning to ask about that .... If FN does not let the subscriber set there own outgoing CID number, can it be done via trouble ticket with verification? Like Callcentric does.

Yep- we'll change it to anything you like as long as you own the number.

Its getting worse. Had a call on my VS number 413 315xxxx. This is the number that showed up on CID 619-582-3747
»whocallsme.com/ is another website I found to record these calls.

Is anyone else getting these, do the carriers care ?

My guess would be a "no" on that one - they don't care. In fact, as long as they're getting paid they'll be happy to assist the spammers.

Is your number on the Do Not Call list? I don't think that'll stop them, but it'll be a good start.

I guess this is a good reminder as to why we need to implement blacklisting and such. I expect the problem to just get worse - it costs spammers literally a fraction of a cent to send a message to your phone - so as long as even a tiny fraction of the target crowd responds and buys - they make money. It's not as prevalent now since some people haven't figured out how to do it yet - but eventually they will.

That is what I am worried about, as long as the carrier gets paid, that's OK with them.
The first number that started getting these spam months ago is a cell phone for the MIL, she never uses it, its just for emergency's. I wrote it off as crap meant for the previous owner of the number...413 330xxxx if anyone is interested.

Yesterday I got one on my cell, 413 330xxxx. Researched the number on the CID and found the sites above.
Today the spammers got to my VS number 413 315xxxx. The history of this and the websites that have popped up to log these calls does not bode well.

So Nitzan/Bruce/Brendan etc. Can these calls be tracked by your systems if something is setup so the public can log these calls ?
Edit to add, first 2 numbers are on the do not call list, third is not.

The ridiculous thing is, that US calls are so cheap, that the actual profit from such spammers is very small. They'll need to send millions of messages for the carrier to make any decent profit at all.

Both of these numbers show up as Omnipoint Miami E License, LLC. - so you found your underlying carrier.

Depends what you mean by tracking. Eventually I see no option but to implement some sort of user-configurable (block or not, and at what level) spam filters, with user submitted numbers to be blocked - but that's a whole project in itself. (it'll have to be smart enough to figure out which numbers really are spam, and which numbers are just someone's ex-bf)

I'll add it to the wish-list.

I have been very successful in almost eliminating spam on my phone. I've had my number for 12 years and it has been with VoicePulse for 3 years. It is on the Do Not Call list. I use Anonymous Call Blocking. Most of the unwanted calls I get are from entities with whom I have done business. Some I filter to voicemail automatically. Others I just don't answer. If the caller ID has an area code that I don't recognize then I don't answer.

Thank the heavens for Caller ID and Anonymous Call Rejection.

Question for all:

..didn't it used to be illegal for telemarketers to call cell phones?

I regularly get spoofed calls on my cell phone from India. I don't know how they got my number, but the relentlessly keep calling. My cell number was added a few years ago to the do not call list as a precaution. It doesn't stop Indian companies from spamming me.
