Your System - July/August 2008

Post your system specs if you've built/bought a new system during the month of July/August.

If you've changed your system, put "ADDED" next to the new component(s).

If you haven't changed anything - don't post!

Re: Your System - July 2008

Goals in order were: reliability, bang-for-buck, low noise, and performance. All prices are after rebate, with no tax and free shipping (mostly from Newegg and Buy.com, accumulated over time). I opted for a higher clocked dual core for my Windows games, which are the only thing I do that actually involves significant CPU utilization. Here's hoping for another 4 1/2 years with maybe a video card upgrade.

Intel C2D E8400 (3.0 GHz, retail)- $185
Gigabyte EP35-DS3L- $85
Corsair DDR2-800 4 GB- $65.50
MSI nVidia 9600GT OC (slot cooler)- $135
Seagate Barracuda ES.2 250 GB-$80
Corsair VX550 power supply- $55
Samsung DVD-DL SATA- $30
Cooler Master Centurion 5 case- $50
SB Live! Value- existing (speaker count be damned, I'm not wasting CPU cycles on sound)

Total: $685.50

It is amazingly quiet, I keep walking into my office thinking I've lost power. The power utilization is pretty nice, too:

4W soft off/standby, 118W POST/spin up, 105W idle in BIOS, 90W OS idle, 125W gaming

Thermaltake W0106RU 700W

Seems to be good. Just finished today and still getting things worked out. I was able to move my previous 2.6ghz 64 X2 into the tv room for file playback and it no longer loses sync on HD content like the 2.0ghz single core did.

Whee!!!
