Re: MS update KB951748 and ZoneAlarm --- PROBLEM

Changing High to medium - it was my first solution. Now I set to high and in "custom" section "allow tcp on ports: 80, 443, 465, 995, 110, 25 - and it works.
Ports are for : http, https, SMTP (ssl), POP (ssl), POP, SMTP
It works.
I don,t know the difference between high and medium level - but now I have high and wait for better solution.

By the way - reinstall - even full - doesn't work
I have latest XP version 70_473_00

I can confirm re-installing Zone Alarm on Windows XP SP3 does not fix the problem. I am using the medium setting for now.

The problem is with Zone Alarm. They are aware of the issue, and are working on it:

For ZA Free, there are two possible fixes: uninstall KB951748, or reset your internet security level to Medium in ZA. Neither is ideal. Uninstalling the update is preferable, but only just.

For those using ZA Pro, here's a suggested solution. IDK if it works, since I'm running ZA Free, but it's worth a try:

For the rest of us, you can always try Comodo Firewall instead:

Comodo is not tweaking over the expanded range of ports this update appears to implement.

For those folks suggesting you drop ZA and all other 3rd-party firewalls and rely on the Windows firewall, I suggest *you* go right ahead. Then call me to fix your computer when you get overrun by malware. Be sure to tell me how proud you are to have ditched those evil 3rd-party firewalls for the Windows Crayola version, so I can charge you extra for stupidity.

I only allowed in custom section tcp port 80 outgoing and ZA is working with High setting

edit: alas it does need more ports allowed
