2 edits | Any such thing as out of box/easy found driver Linux Scanner
Old one wouldn't even work VISTA (XEROX 6400) considered obsolete even for Windows (And 2 years old)
So any suggestion for out off box dectnt scanner for Linux, or easily found good driver for some model?
And yes I know there is a Linux scanner data base (some how those drives exist but not printers in general?)
But also full (not just basic) functionality as a criteria as well... assumedly what ever it is would also have WIN and Mac drivers, I'd have only passing interest in.

4 edits | Well again I know of that but rather not go through a LOT of SIFTING/price checking.... was really looking for a basic recommendation for medium level quality (like 2400dpi standard page... legal might be nice... maybe with transp capability)/cost and overall functionallity compared to WIN/Mac.

| I found out Brother printers and scanners work pretty good with Linux. Brother has all the drivers on their site. I have a Brother scanner/printer/fax and have not had any problems. It didn't work "out of the box" however it only took the double click of a rpm file to install. |

| I believe the driver was on the CD however I went to Brothers web site and search for "linux" and they had updated drivers so I used those. Go look around their site and pick out a printer and search for the driver. Here is their Linux page:

4 edits | Well again the postscript capable DELL Printer even the generic Color Laser Driver works quite well, again even some options that never did under WIN.... only thing really missing is the toner GAS GUAGE..
Issue at the moment is scanner.
I HATE all in one solutions (print/scan/fax).... FUP's loose everything. (As well as spec usually big compromise)

For Linux support I've had great luck with Samsung Printers and Epson scanners...
Epson scanners generally offer the choices of open source and proprietary drivers... |

OK I'll admit it.... Keys laid back (You ever want to know about the Keys come to the SE forum... I'll save you lots of time & BS)  any particular model(s) suggestions in mind?

Of those models I personally own an Epson Perfection 1260 but I wouldn't hold my breath trying to find that particular model these days. Most likely discontinued...
Corss-referencing here »www.pricewatch.com/brands/scanne···on-1.htm the Perfection 4490 is listed as both available and completely supported...
My advice would be to snap one up before they're completely discontinued...  |

OK there is a check mark but would like something with basic transparancy capability too....
And this isn't exactly encouraging for ease of use

The Canon and the one I had before it (a LiDE 10, I think) were essentially ready for use by plugging them in. I did have to set up a udev rule to keep from having to run XSane as root under Slackware.
No suggestions on transparency work. |

I pretty confident in saying that any epson model that has the feature you want is going to work. In the past the only issues I ever ran into was the system throwing a fit because it didn't have the exact device usb id in it's list so it wouldn't allow the device 'user' access. Thank kernel people that protect you from evil usb devices for that one. |

Are you stuck on a standalone scanner? I've had really good luck with just about all the all-in-one OfficeJets from HP. HP is pretty much Linux-friendly in this area. They even officially support Debian on some of their servers. |
