[OhDoh] Weakining ....

Been thinking this house is too empty being cat free.

The daughter has always tried to bring more critters here, but no new pets is the rule passed to her. She is almost 19 and sometimes is home ... such a critter is for the wife and I to chose. She brought it up last night even! Saying Missy needs a buddy (I told her to try being Missy's buddy and play with her more.)

If they were kitten(s), they might actually like Missy.
The old ones merely hissed and meowed in disdain.
"Kittens" meaning two. One (indoor) cat just means they need more attention.
Missy may be the last dog we have, but I expect another good seven years, or so more, with her.

Go wander the local animal shelter and see which kittens 'adopt' you...I'm sure there's got to be part of a litter there, and two will just find a way to let you know you're theirs, now.
He's with Mom and Dad, now, but when I adopted Sebastian Aloysious (yes, he had a middle name) he actually picked me. Couldn't have worked out better.

I know your situation. The daughter came and got the granddaughter's dog, so now we just have this ugly old cat. And she walks around and meows all the time because she is lonely. I am thinking about getting another cat, but I don't know how well I would do matching cats...
I think they get lonely...

I'll say they get lonely, get this:

Thursday night I arrived in CT and stayed at my brother's house. Well, they are watching over a cat named Mongo that is a very sweet loving cat, however:

They can't let the cat into the main part of the house because the kids are severely allergic to him, their faces get all puffed up and swollen and worse. The cat is the pet of a relative of my brother's wife, and this girl goes off and works on a ship for months on end.

Well, poor big old Mongo is starved for attention. My brother had me stay in the room with Mongo. That cat was on me like flies on poop, "molesting" me all night, claws digging into my face, climbing all over me, splashing drool all over me, and rubbing his wet nose all over my arms. And you know? I love animals so much that I couldn't lose my cool with poor Mongo. It took 4 hours for the feline to calm down and let me sleep. I was a wreck in the morning.

I'd love to have a cat like Mongo, I prefer highly interactive pets that are loving, but I'd have to train him to chill out some.

I now realize, these last few years, that cats CAN be wonderful companions, who knew!?

One of my sister's cats has disappeared just in the last couple of days, and they are moving soon, so we're upset about that, it's also a loving cat.

Thanks for all the feedback. There is no twisting the wife's arm. She is surprised I changed my tune. No effort was needed to get her to come take a look at prospective furry candidates. Even my insistence of wanting a pair went without argument.

We checked out a Humane Society shelter and have committed to taking a pair of "strays" 8-9 weeks old. Seems when strays come in in quantity - its more likely from an unwanted litter, and the people don't want to say so.

The rescue place called them Peanut Butter, and Jelly. We have pretty much decided to rename these girl and boy cats Bonnie, and Clyde.

They will be fixed, and we pick them up Tuesday. A two for the price of one special too.

I don't know what people here think about declawing,
but I am inclined to want the front claws gone.

Based on their age, next may their birthday and mine will be about the same time.

When we had the three cats, they were declawed when they were about 8 years old, and never suffered adversely. I tend to agree with the article I referenced.

I had many doorways and carpets destroyed before that. They were never short on scratching posts. They got along with me much better without claws. They would still occasionally act like they could claw the arm of a sofa, but no need to worry. They were all dedicated lap cats; always friendly - best friends ever.

Well...better declawed and in a loving home, and I do understand your thoughts on this, but my 2 cents worth?

When we got out current little terror, we fully planned on getting him declawed, as our furnitre was almost brand new, but the folks at the shelter were really aghast over it...
and the more I read up on it, the less I wanted to do this.

Turns out that with a reasonably minor amount of effort, and a willingness to find the kinds of scratching posts that best appealed to him, Crash has never torn up a single piece of furniture in the house, and he is a very rambunctious kitty!

I can, and do understand why someone might opt for declawing, but clipping the claws regularly is very quick, easy, and minimizes clawing issues.

We have two declawed and three not. The declawed ones never skipped a beat (declawed as kittens) and the way they work at trying to sharpen their non-existent claws on the furniture tells me it was a good deal for all of us. I don't feel guilty.

I sincerely wish two of the non-declawed ones had been done. I have yet to find any sort of scratching post which will distract them from scratching the woodwork, carpets and furniture.

Make sure you have a competent vet and keep them indoors. I am constantly trying to keep neighbor outdoor cats from running under the garage door as it closes and from skittering through my yard just after I put down weed killer. Personally, I think it is more unkind to let them run loose these days than to have a kitten declawed by a competent vet so it makes a good indoor pet.

Sunny, how were you able to stop your clawed guys from scratching on everything? I had a cat who was trained to use a scratch board. I then moved in a place where I inherited a cat who had been declawed. Well Nia figured if Shelby was able to scratch anywhere she pleased, she could too.

I did a bunch of research and found cats fight mostly with their teeth and back legs. I ended up getting Nia de-clawed and she didn't even realize the difference. She still climbed a 8 ft. concrete wall and our 30 ft. tree. She also would chase any visiting cat out of the yard. She was mainly an indoor cat but I would let her out in the back yard and she never left the yard.

Since Nia, I've gotten my guys front declawed when they go in for their neutering. Mainly because I've always had a declawed cat around when I adopt. Within a day or so of the surgery, they have all been back to normal with their running, jumping, and climbing.

Frankly, I haven't been able to break the two clawed ones who do scratch everything and am seriously considering looking for a vet who will declaw them. They are both about eight years old, but I'm tired of having flattened cardboard boxes up against door frames and having to remember to put something in front of otherwise accessible screen doors and windows and keeping furniture covered with throws, etc. Until they are declawed, there is no point in even repairing damage already done.

I love the little critters, but I have tried everything. I regret this wasn't done when they were kittens, but we paid too much attention to those who would shame us for considering the declawing. Now I have thousands of dollors of damage and still need to do the deed.

Hmmmmm, the two scratching girls are actually about six years old. I misremembered. I told Jo about one of them in July 2002 here: »Re: .

Chigger is one of them and Midget (a gargantuan grey and white girl) is the other.

Bandit, incidentally, is not declawed, but he's a sweetheart and I'm not having the problem with him. He does occasionally go after the carpeting, but it is so thick and so tough he doesn't seem to damage it.

Tigger, Tippy, and Midnight were all declawed. I think the were around 8 yrs and did fine. They were all stable temperament before and after.

I submitted:
And:

. . . to snopes.com to see if they had an opinion, about the "Toe Amputation". I respect those that feel strongly about not declawing. Most people opposed, I think, would rescue and love a declawed cat.

The girl at the humane society had both clawed and declawed cats of her own. She claimed she would never choose to have it done, but her's were already done.

We are taking them to our vet for a checkup tomorrow after work.

As do I and I feel I have really tried to even go along with those who feel strongly for the past ten years (Bandit is not declawed and he is ten years old). I'm just about ready to give up, though.

I am not thrilled with declawing, but don't get me wrong...sometimes it may be the only solution, and I can understand that.

I think that you have to start when they are kittens, if you are going to have a lot of success not having them claw furniture, which with my kitty, we were able to do, I suspect though that once a cat has the habit of clawing furnishings, it is probably hard to impossible to change.

I do not and would never mean to be "negative" on anyone who may decide that declawing is their best or only option, I had one of my cats declawed when we purchased new furniture...and he had always been one to claw up furniture...and he did tolerate it pretty well, but with a young kitten, I think that it is worth a try to train him/her to use a scratching post/pad.

BTW, cats like to scratch both vertically and horizontally, and some cats prefer one type of surface over another, so different scratching post/pad solutions may be in order.

Crash never really liked the carpet-covered scratchers...but just loves the sissal covered ones! Also, he has several cardboard flat-scratchers, and he uses both...and happily leaves the chairs/couch etc. alone.
