Re: Save Taxpayers From Government

said by marigolds:

Of course, you ignore the lengthy list of government-run internet successes.... (more then 80 just in the state of Iowa).
I'm surprised those have not been advertised here. The problem is that even when it does work, most of the time governments are either using tax money or are siphoning funds from some other municipally run service to subsidize the project. These things don't pay for themselves. People who have no use for broadband should not be expected to pay the costs for those who do, and on top of that, government should not be in the business of providing luxury services when there are plenty of other things that government needs to take care of that are more important instead.

I'd rather my tax money go to pay for schools, roads, police, fire, paramedics and other vital services before it goes for paying for luxury services like broadband and cable TV.

Well, there's a reason such companies avoid these areas.

Read my post above.. doesn't sound much like Comcast was ignoring these areas. In fact, it sounds like the opposite was happening. Incumbent providers will do almost anything it takes to maintain their -opoly, short of actually competing in a free market. I guess PACs aren't the only thing politicians and communications companies have in common.

To quibble about the minuscule portion of government funds that actually go into these projects is like complaining about spit in the ocean.

Iowa forbids the expenditure of tax money on utilities.
The funds come from other government run utilities (almost always electric or phone, occasionally gas and water).

I would imagine then that funds are siphoned off from these utilities to subsidize the broadband.

why should you be surprised on why it wasnt advertised here? Karl only posts the negs about Muni and about companies. Not the positive. But if it is positive he always puts "as i noted" or something along those lines about something going wrong such as FairPoint and 911. He still is going on about that.

Not directly. The utilities are forbidden from cross-subsidization. They are subsidized indirectly though. The utilities are funded by revenue bonds, but the revenue bonds are partially backed by the credit of the other utilities. As well, the utilities likely share upper level management and maintenance staff. This actually saves money for both utilities though.
So, since this could affect the bond rating of the other utility, they might pay more interest on their own existing bonds. Of course, if your electric or phone utility is not in debt, then there is not even indirect funding. The revenue bonds are not financially backed by the other utilities, so if the broadband utility fails then the electric or phone utility takes a rating hit but nothing else.
