remote access to mail server?

My wife goes on the road a lot with her laptop and because I have the teksavvy smtp server configured she is unable to send email. I understand that this is to thwart spammers, but I'm wondering if it would be possible to configure some kind of authentication to allow remote access? We had this feature on our old Sympatico account, and it is the only complaint we have about switching to TSI.

You could use the webmail:

»webmail.teksavvy.com/mail/

You're probably accustomed to outlook/express, but it's a possible solution.

The quickest solution would be:

-Get a GMail account
-Complete the verification process, which allows you to add your teksavvy email as a verified sender
-At that point you can use the GMail SMTP server for sending email from your Teksavvy acct.

(When logged into GMail it's under:
Settings>>Accounts>>Send Mail As Section )

You don't have to use the GMail account if you don't want to, you'd just be using the SMTP server...

Outlook Express? Please. She uses Thunderbird; I use Gnus.

Thanks for the gmail tip.

For the record, in case Somebody Important is reading this, I'd still prefer authentication on the TSI server to the gmail workaround.

Yeah, I think the teksavvy mail won't send out unless you're on a teksavvy IP, emoci.

DrXenon, I only said Outlook Express since thats what 90% of people are accustomed to use, when its quite possibly the worst piece of crap software out there
Glad to see you know better

Well, I have used it with Google, remember that you'd really have google sending the email via their servers, but the Reply-To address remains as TekSavvy...

Ahh, ok, I though it connected to teksavvy servers with your login to send.
If its sent from google with a "reply to:" then it would work.

I only use it for linking two gmail accounts, so I wasn't aware of how the sending works for 3rd party emails.

Yeah, that's great if you use your teksavvy account. We have email addresses that predate (by 15 years) our relationship with teksavvy, and we'd like to continue to use them, even when we are on the road.

you can *forward* e-mail to 1 e-mail address, all mail servers support this today, infact it is even *automated*

Then use the SMTP servers provided by those mail hosts?

Yeah, we could. It's a hassle though, because we have to establish VPN connections with these verisign dongles. We'd much prefer just to have TLS authentication on the teksavvy mail server, if it's not too much to ask.

Sounds like your mail host needs to move into the 20th century...or something like that.

My current email hosting provider provides me with this solution so regardless of what provider i use, I can still send mail, I use SSL on port 995 with SMTP authentication...works like a charm...

Maybe get your email hosting provider to get something non VPN related. I doubt that teksavvy would do this, but if you're paying for a web/email hosting service they should be able to handle this request.

The company I work for, which has 60000 employees, uses Lotus Notes for email, and the only way you can talk to the Notes server is through VPN. Which means you have to negotiate a separate VPN session every time you want to send an email. Like I said, it's a hassle.

My peculiar situation aside, I'm sure it's not an uncommon user request to be able to send email from a laptop in an internet cafe.

while not in a cafe, i would love to be able to send email from my work's domain.. right now, every time a message is received on my tsi account that i must reply to i have to log into web mail, or reply from my work email (which i don't do because that could get it on a spam list).

I also can't seem to access the Teksavvy mail server via. the iPhone. Works fine with Mozilla Thunderbird though.

Yeah, I keep failing to screw up the courage to tell the head of IT that he's doing it ALL WRONG. And don't get me started on the hard-coded 5 minute timeout on the VPN.
