Re: [iPhone] 2.0.1 is Out!

Computers don't know about "lucky." If it sees a bunch of waps and knows where they are then the circle gets smaller and therefore more accurate.

Not Incorrect, your are lucky. Without the GPS chip the iPhone/iPod just uses cellular triangulation/WAPs to determine where you are. Definitely not accurate.

Used pwnage 2.02 and put on the new firmware and it seems like all the issues at least for me cleared up. Those being the constant freezing and slow response typing in either texts or emails.

Your location is not going to be accurate unless you have a 3G.
Incorrect. Mine places me perfectly.

It doesn't log into any WiFi, it just knows where all the antennas are.
It doesn't need to log on to any wifi. It just needs to SEE the wifi routers. That's enough for it to figure out location-related information from the routers.

Turn wi-fi completely off and then try again. I'd be surprised if you were still "placed perfectly".

Wifi on my Touch worked very well, showed my exact location when at the house.

As for Bellboy, was it a muni WiFi?
Nah...I was sitting at home on my network.

It finally did work and show the correct location...only after two reboots. Nearly perfect.

What can I say.. no problems here. I'm running 20+ apps and counting.. adding more every week. Things are smooth as far as I can tell. Location services work well, too, including Maps and GPS and everything. Looking forward to the notification service that's supposed to roll out next month.

Ok...it's official...Maps is broken. For me anyway.

I just recently swapped my 1G phone under warranty. I plead my case about all of the goofy stuff that was happening--10 hour backup, etc. They had pity on me and I got a new phone.

Things were looking good at first...1 hour backup after setting it up as a new phone and reloading everything. But tonight as I sit watching the replay of the Cubs/Cards game, I tried looking up my location in Maps. On wifi it was kind enough to tell me that was actually sitting 10 miles away from my real current location. I've done this very thing before at home and this was a first for me on 2.0.1. Anyone else seen this?

Oh and add to that the typing delay issue is back as I type this at 1 WPM. Fuck.

Interesting. I'm suspecting my phone has a hardware issue or something, since almost every update has gone poorly. I have a Day 1 original iPhone. I've only got 16 apps on it. That doesn't seem like a lot. I haven't had a chance to check out the performance improvements yet.
I bought mine week 3, and my wife got hers for Christmas. After awhile I started noticing she would have 3 bars and I'd have no service. Took it back with less than a week left on 1 year warranty and they immediately replaced it and now my problems are gone.

Just bring it to the apple store and let them swap it out for you.

After MUCH arm chair research on Touch WiFi problems after 2.0.1, one forum (I can't remember the name, so take it with a ton of salt) said the FUBAR rate was about 1 in 10 for 2.0

I'm guessing that 2.0.1 is less, with a focus on WiFi for Touch users.

I upgraded to 2.0.1 with absolutely no issues. The backup took about 15 minutes. I had only a few pieces of software on at the time, though, so that probably helped.

The only things I notice are that everything seems to work faster....I use Notes a lot and typing response was painfully slow, as was tapping on the screen to use the keyboard. Safari crashes now too--didn't before the upgrade.

Once again, I had a horrific update experience. I was on vacation in Southern California last week, so I didn't update my phone till I got home last night.

1. Download seemed to be fine, and apparently my iPhone got backed up before the update started.

2. Couldn't update the phone. Started restore procedure.

3. Cant restore the phone. Error 6. Repeatable every time.

4. Looked around here. No one else was having this problem. Looked on the web. Saw a bunch of different suggestions, some apparently winders specific. Don't use the dock. Reinstall iTunes. Restore the phone from a different computer and then restore the back up from the original computer.

5. Tried not using the dock. Same issue.

6. Tried reinstalling iTunes. Nothing.

7. Tried restoring the phone on my MBP. this worked, and I had a blank phone with 2.0.1 on it.

8. Restored the backup from my main computer. It put everything I wanted on there, except the apps I downloaded on my trip and my photos and music. Why doesn't it do those?

Anyway, I don't get why this happens. It should be bulletproof.

I waited a couple of weeks to update my new (Apple store refurb) Touch thinking there would be a 'fix' release soon enough on the 2.0 firmware. I was right.

So I waited a week or so to hear of any problems with this firmware before upgrading.

The factory stock 1.1.4 Touch ran pretty good on an open AP here but not so well on one with WEP. Both are Belkin .11b access points. So I ran it on the open AP and it allowed me to check news headlines, mail, etc, without problem.

I upgraded, uneventfully, through iTunes last night to 2.0.1.

WiFI now drops constantly on the open access point. I've rebooted the touch, I've reset network and I'm ready to say with confidence (after struggling with a macbook and WiFi) that Apple's WiFi is not ready for prime time. I say this because my powerbook and my powermac (both with original airport cards), a friends iBook and two windows wireless notebooks have zero problems on the same access points.

Other than the WiFi, I also notice that it takes a lot longer to completely close an app by holding down the round button. What few apps I tried seemed to work OK until the wireless began dropping, which was - without fail - after about five minutes of turning wireless off and back on to smack it in the head after it dropped out. I never show more than two bars 10 feet from the AP. I used to get three, but would drop to two if I left the room with the AP. But I stayed connected! Googling this problem turns up a small, but growing, number of people with the same irritation.

Apple wants me to buy an airport express to solve this problem.

Yeah. I don't think so.

Problems with Apple products have grown extremely tiresome lately. This is NOT why I switched exclusively and spent a good chunk of change helping keep aapl afloat.

--

EDIT: my powerbook has an AE .11g card; the powermac an original card

I just had a failure with my wife's new 3G iphone:

-Updated old iPhone to 2.01
-Backed up old iphone
-Updated new iPhone to 2.01
-Restored backup on new iPhone

(same thing as alwasy) The restore took 3 hours to complete and when it was done, all apps from the app store crash on launch.

C'mon. Backup/Restore should be a simple function to get right Apple!

Am still having the issue where Contacts can take 5 to 10 seconds before being usable.
Also still have the Slow Keyboard issue too even after a full restore.
It's fast at first but after a days use slows down again.
Yes, I'm seeing the same thing here. The contacts thing is reallyyy anoying.
