| Nothing the average informed computer used couldn't do themselves free. Why pay $14.95 a month for services you probably will never use? PC Tune-Up? There are so many freeware alternatives, CCleaner?
Who needs someone to help them set up software, its not a difficult thing to do. Also, how often do you really have hardware issues or get a virus? I'm sure some of this is great for grandma and grandpa who don't know a thing about computers and click on links saying "CLICK HERE TO CLAIM YOUR PRIZE!!", but for most people this is a total waste of money.
Embarq already charges almost double what our cable company does for faster speeds, just another rip off. |

| Most people who browse this website will not need this service. However, we represent a tiny minority of total computer users...most of whom would benefit from services such as this. Ignorant statements such as "Who needs someone to help them set up software, its not a difficult thing to do..." only goes to show your lack of knowledge on what the majority of Embarq's user base is.
Granted, the price is steep, but so is paying the auto dealership to repair your car. Some people already have the knowledge and know-how to fix their own cars by hand, but most of us do not know enough about them, so we pay a premium in order to fix them. |

| now, if EQ can offer the same speeds that cox is giving me, i would switch (20/2.5)
I don't know how embarq is surviving out here in fort walton beach,fl besides from phone services, their net is slow but cheap. if i had to downgrade, i'd switch.

| There's been a huge increase in iterations of Windows Antivirus '08/'09. I've seen ads for this junk on reputable websites. My mom actually has RescueIT and they were able to help her get this off. Darn thing looks so legit that even reputable websites are putting it up. |

Right; unless you have a command-economy, if a product is something "no one will ever use", it wouldn't exist.
The very reason it does exist proves that there's at least a suspicion of a market (and if the product continues to exist, it does prove there is a market). -- "True Patriotism is more closely linked with dissent than it is to conformity and a blind desire for safety and security...I accept the definition of patriotism as that effort to resist abusive state power." -Ron Paul |

| reply to embarq_llewi So you charge someone $200 for a house call (»rescueit.embarq.com/plans.html) and then turn around and send out that work to an independent contractor for $70. Do you tell that to your customers or do you only let them figure it out for themselves? -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

| I'd have to say that Embarq needs to make money, just like any other business. And they've looked at the other tech support companies and tried to keep it in line with what they charge, but still try to make it cheaper. The charge that the contractor has is variable. Dell charges $100 for $25 ram, do you think they tell their customers that? |

| Well I think the problem is they are trying to push every call to tech support to RescueIT.
Recently we we trying to setup a VPN router for a user that works at home. Embarq (as usual) says everything on their end is ok -- "It must be the router"
Well embarq sent one of their techs, contracted through onforce.com, who "fixed" the issue in a few minutes -- modem was not set to bridge mode.
Of course we are going to peruse embarq to refund the $200 charge for the tech to come out and tell us, basically, that embarq support was (once again) wrong. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

| I've never been "forced" over to RescueIT from any call to Embarq's tech support. It has never even been mentioned in any of my calls.
In your case, the problem was not on Embarq as your internet connection was functioning fine. You were trying to configure a VPN, which is above and beyond the realm that Embarq's normal tech support handles. You have no one to blame but yourself for agreeing to pay $200 to have a tech configure your modem for VPN use. |

| reply to embarq_llewi Embarq tech on the phone assured us the modem was in bridge mode. All the tech onsite did was switch the modem from routed to bridged.
It happens all the time. Fist troubleshooting step for no connectivity is to reset the modem back to defaults.
So you are saying we need to pay $200 because Embarq lied to us? Not acceptable. Embarq support really is piss-poor. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

| Embarq wouldn't have sent an on-force tech out without you knowing what was going on. You would've had to agree to the charges. Also, you would've talked to one of the RIT techs who would've easily been able to see if you were bridged or not.
Also, bridging the modem isn't supported by Embarq. They do it, but they do not support it. It was your router that was causing the problem, and the easiest fix was the bridge the modem. You very easily could have hooked the modem up to your computer to see if it was getting an IP address. You also could've hung up, and called back in. They don't force on-force techs to you, and the only way you would've gotten one is if you had talked to a RescueIT tech, who wouldn't have dispatched right away. |

I signed up for this because we were so happy to have DSL I would've signed up for eight stray dogs and a used toothbrush...the free modem is very nice, and they have been able to answer some questions sensibly for my 84 year old mother when we were not available. Seems like it would be a useful product for the elderly, or technically inept. And we have both of those categories here |

You would be amazed at the technical level of the customers that we deal with on the support. Yes, most people who are here won't use the service, but there are also people who call in for support and don't even know how to use the address bar, or what it is. Of course we support them in that, but when it comes to things that aren't directly related to their Embarq connection, such as spyware, viruses, networking, VPNs, etc, it will be offered, because those are out of the scope of support and not directly related to the internet connection. Sometimes people expect too much from service providers - we provide the internet connection and support the internet connection. A VPN isn't something we're providing, its an extra thing you're running on your own. You don't call your car company and expect them to tell you how to install a turbocharger do you?
For the monthly price, compared to other PC support services, it is a great value if you are to use it. |
