| Need some basic Cisco education
I took a CCNA course in 1999 or 2000, but have never worked anywhere that used Cisco equipment (too expensive was always the given answer) until now. I was not hired here to know any Cisco as my boss (more on that later) had lots and had several certifications.
On my first day he told me he was leaving and the following Wednesday was his last day. I almost quit on the spot.
Since then (4 months) they have kept him on a contract but they want to stop. I need some knowledge, fast. I just need to be able to check and configure VLANS and routing and firewall configs (both older PIX and newer ASAs).
What do you guys recommend? I think I can get the company to pay for this.

clubs:  | Look for local training centers for refresher courses and get a Cisco support contract, they are pricey but can generally walk you through almost any configuration over the phone.
I'm almost certain the CCNA is a 2 year renewal anyways. |

First thing I'd do, is backup all of the configs if that's not already being done. If you make a mistake, you can always go back by reloading the config.
I know that doesn't help as far as getting training, but you'd be surprised what you can learn from the configs.
I'm currently reading the CCNA Study Guide by Todd Lammle. So far it has helped me. Maybe you could start there.

Especially this -- if they won't pay for Smartnet then look for somewhere else to work! They will literally walk you through configuring telnet and "config t" type stuff if they have to. You can even open a case for a general question even if nothing is broken. |

Yeah the support contract is one of the key reasons to have Cisco gear. If your work is willing to pay go for some global knowledge or some other vendor basic training never hurts. To study on your own would pick up some Cisco press books or quick reference guides never hurts. The best way to learn is to practice setting up cisco equipment. If you got equipment around that you aren't using setting up a practice lab with some switches / routers never hurts. Also grabbing all the configs you have on your equipment and learning what each line of code does is another set in the right direction to understand how your particular network works. Any of these steps / others to learn and use cisco will help you learn. |

I just want to be able to make changes, not design the whole thing  I am not good on reading it myself and self study, I learn better from someone showing me.
We have no contracts for support. We are using Cisco for the name, really.

Install the SDM for routers, PDM for the PIX, or ASDM for the ASA.
The web interfaces (xxDM)are quite easy to use. |
