| Centurytel is throttling speeds on Rapidshare.com
OK I cannot explain this, but say I am downloading a movie from rapidshare. premium account 7 parts (7 x 100 mb each part)
I will get decent speed, say 150-212 KB/s on ONLY 6 out of 7 links. It seems that centurytel is throttling the download of the last link in every single case. On the 7th link with the low speed, I get about 6-10 KB/s it is going to take about 3 hours to finish that 100 mb download vs the other links finish in under 8 min.
I am on the 10 mb plan, and I get actually over the 10 mb cap on most cases (currently 11234kb/s according to speedtest.net) but from rapidshare I am getting under 10KB/s.
Is CT using some sort of packet sniffer or seeing that I am downloading files of approx the same name and throttling me somehow?
How can this be avoided, other than switching to another ISP? (centurytel has a monopoly in this area)
Also even if I only have 1 link going my max speed from rapidshare is 325 KB/s when I have gotten over 11553 KB/s on this connection package. |

| I honestly don't think that's what's going on. AFAIK, CTL doesn't do any throttling or shaping at all.
I download using Rapidshare, newsgroups, and the like and don't have any issues. -- The goal of the broadcast engineer is to get all the meters on the transmitter to go as far to the right as possible!! |

| reply to Jobe yah of course I run speed tests. Maybe it is just a regional thing. I download from rapidshare all the time. I downloaded 3 700 mb movies today each time I ended up carrying a link over ( I try to download only 1 movie at a time if at all possible) But I started 7 x100 links and had 1 that only hit 12k peak. After 6 had finished I have the 1 left that said it was going to take between 2 and 3 hours to finish. So I started another movie. Again 6 links hit decent speeds so the 6 were done in about 8-10 min. And 1 link still said 2-3 hours to go as well as the original from movie #1 that had about 2.5 hours to go. So I started yet another movie. And 6 links got good speeds and 1 of the 7 did not. So after another 8-10 min I had 3 links going at 12k/s and had to wait about 3 hours for the 3 movies to finish.
When I was downloading it said I was getting 11234kb/s
Here: is my current
which is a bit slow today.
I have tried using different browsers, logging out of rapidshare etc etc. Same difference.
So if it is not centurytel then what is it? If it was rapidshare, then resetting my IP range should work, I can run from 4 different ranges. So if it was rapidshare throttling me then I could just change my IP. I can start the download in firefox and try to get the file that wants to download slow to download in GETRIGHT, IE, or OPERA makes no difference, logged into rapid premium or not I get 5 to 12 KB/sec from the 7th rapidshare.com link.
So if you are all so sure it is not centurytel then explain that to me. I have seen in other posts that speed depends on how far away from the ISP hub, etc etc. It is across the street.
But thanx for any actual helpful info.
Oh and thanx BigVe but I have rapid premium and there is a big change in speed on free for the files that I normally download. But thanx for your help anyway. |

| Simple enough to investigate. Can you download several files at once, using your browser, from a different server? Maybe hit one .iso three times and see what happens?
Or, crack up three or four downloads from a newsgroup?
For all we know, this may be a problem with Rapidshare... -- The goal of the broadcast engineer is to get all the meters on the transmitter to go as far to the right as possible!! |

said by jezme :CT does throttle you, and everyone else back. Maybe I should have quoted, this is why I responded.
We have been through this before, maybe the area is oversold, but throttled, I don't believe it. Many different areas effect downloads and uploads, many home routers today have trouble with the load from torrents. They were not designed for the amount of connections it takes to accomplish decent downloads. I have heard people complain about not getting full speed, only to find that they are using a wireless connection that is slower than the internet connection they are using. Each case has many variables, many of which the user or download site have an effect on. -- Ofallon, Mo Weather |

I did not deny that they have oversold areas. |
