| reply to Jobe Re: Centurytel is throttling speeds on Rapidshare.com
Jobe, the problem you are having with the last file of a rapidshare set has to be a bug with rapidshare...since you are able to start another set of seven while the last is still going and the new files all run at your 200K peak with rapidshare. Granted that your Premium account should give much more than this 200K with your 10.0mg account with C-Tel.(I have the same C-Tel service as you and routinely have issues between 1pm and up to midnight CST and sometimes even after midnight CST) I noticed by your speedtest.net post which you ran after midnight GMT which should give better speeds than at peak business hours...have you tried running these RS downloads at other times of the day and night?
In our area after 1pm is the business crunch...then the 3pm to 11pm school kids beating the hell out of youtube, myspace, etc...eats up most of our bandwidth(mid Missouri). So experiment with your DL times. This may give you more insight as to what's going on.
If you're still limited to around 200K at all times then the culprit almost has to be C-Tel...here's why...RS servers are numerous throughout the globe, and of course like all servers and services experience overloads during peak usage times resulting in slower speeds to all connected. If you experience this 200K max throught the day & night with C-Tel and other C-Tel users posting here do not have these issues with RS then it's obviously a C-Tel issue "in your area"! Note some of these posts are from here in Missouri, some from Lousiana, and yours from somewhere around Michigan. I would first contact RS tech support about the issue then C-Tel...you will be lied to so be prepared...it's the way business seems to be done today no matter how honest you are. Keep in mind that they have $millions$ to protect by not disclosing their practices to the public...can you say COMCAST??? or Charter Cable...both of which are now using the term "up to" in their high speed services ads...I know Comcast was forced to by lawsuit, but I'm not sure about Charter...C-Tel will join them soon to avoid lengthy and costly suits as well. There are many factors in getting everyone good speeds and service with DSL...lines, COS switches, fiber, routers, servers etc...but make no mistake, your C-Tel service is also "up to" 10.0mbs which you may or may not achieve at any given time. C-Tel is a decent service most of the time, in my experience, and I truly believe that they are working to make things better in an imperfect world so everyone should relax a bit and try to fix what needs to be fixed and realize that what it all boils down to is that when a customer is not getting what they paid for, tempers are gonna flare simply because it's not honest, nor fair, and it also isn't good business. Which is obviously why there are C-Tel reps posting here on this site, and a word for them as well..."be part of the solution, not part of the problem!" XLR8R I've been "part of the solution" since I joined these boards in 2004, so what "problem" are you assuming we're (techs) part of? Not trying to flame you, so don't take it that way....just stating my purpose here. | | XLR8R

| There are numerous posts here in this thread not helping Jobe's issue...Does anyone here have a RS Premium account? If so, are any of you experiencing the same issues as Jobe with any service provider? Or with CT? In the MI area? Obviously, if there are CT users having no issues like Jobe's with RS in the midwest then it must be a CT issue in MI. I do not have a RS Premium account, and I think it will take a post from someone who does to give needed info to Jobe's issue. You nailed it right here, but then start talking about it being a CT problem if it's during peak usage times. The point is, if he can download all but the last one, which goes slow, yet he can hop right over and do a speed test, ftp, or anything else and get normal results, then it's obviously not a CT problem. So it would appear that I'm helping diagnose what the problem isn't, right?

I don't even use RS, and I have given him just as much info as anyone else has....that it isn't his ISP throttling his connection, which was his original assumption. | | XLR8R

| ICON, I'm sure Jobe and others appreciate your assurance that he is not being throttled, I certainly do. Now we know for sure where his problem "isn't"! However, 1 or 2 more bits of info from a RS Premium user anywhere in the US will give us info needed to determine where the culprit lies. Need a RapidShare Premium user to post...Thank You! Hell, I might just have to buck up myself and call it a tech support expense...I'll check with accounting and get back to you all. XLR8R | | seagreen Premium,Mod join:2001-05-14 out there
