| It is the consensus of geeks worldwide that offsite backup is the only real backup. This can be done one of two ways: sneakernet or internet. The latter makes much more sense because nothing physical has to be moved from point A to point B in an effort to keep the stuff on that media safe. The data just goes over the network.
But wait...with crap...er...caps, you can't back up all your videos (not movies, videos...the ones you take yourself), photos and other rich media, and cloud computing stops working the way it should.
Microsoft is working on Midori, a cloud computing centric OS. It ain't gonna work on a capped broadband infrastructure nearly as well as a regular desktop...looks like Microsoft will get a lot of FiOS customers but few others for their new concept :/ |

| Once companies are required to show everything relevant about their service, the numbers can be used as a basis for competition. It worked well enough for download speeds, there was a real push to keep improving them. As more people hit transfer caps, and the information is available, there will be a competition to provide higher transfer caps. |

| reply to NOZIREV Nope, not a pirate. I'm an avid video- and audio-holic that gets legal content in legal manners, plus do video and audio editing/mastering as a semi-professional hobby, plus administer IT networks for many small business (online backup, you bet), plus tinker with opensource projects, plus relax with a video game here and there. I doubt I'll be over 250 in a month at anytime, but where does it end? If 250 is the end cap, what is the number to begin throttling? At what point will my daily usage of the internet become affected. I'll gladly take a lower throughput to 3 mbps and be just fine if I can get a clear definition of capacity restraints. No option, just 250=shutoff mystery number=throttle to ... 768? 1.5? At those speeds I will have to begin looking for options outside the home. I like working from home. |

And don't forget gaming. When I'm in that mode, that's 20GB of http traffic easily (and much more than I'd download from P2P in 6 months even).
With D2D being an outlet now, and online movies, 250GB may not be enough. Downloading the full EQII+Patches = 16GB alone. It all adds up! -- Zionism is a crime
