I finally did it... built myself a small studio!

My dad has this very big condo in which he hardly ever lives in since he's most of the time away in business. Like now, he just left for 1 month to Asia.

His living room is approximately 15ft by 25ft, with a cathedral ceiling that goes about 25ft. A perfect location for a small studio. Since I'm in sabbatical for a year (took a pause from the long 80h work weeks!!!) I'll have all the time in the World to shoot and have fun.

For the past month I've been slowly building it. Backdrop (a few muslins that I now regret buying, a white seamless roll), stands, L-358 meter for my noob metering skills, etc. And finally yesterday, finally ordered the last bit.

3x AB400, 2x Cybersynch transmitters (one on camera, on strapped on the light meter so I can trigger wirelessly), one receiver (will trigger the other optically), one beauty dish and one large octabox... it should be here by Tuesday. Paul. C Buff has an amazing CS team and after playing my 1x AF540 I own and 2x borrowed SB-800 I was able to determine B400 will do what I need to do, and if I ever need to upgrade, AB will upgrade my 400 to 800s for 50$ a pop plus shipping. I would have gotten one light only to begin with, but shipping isn't cheap and you get 15% of accessories with 3 lights... 15% is the tax and brokerage I'm likely to pay at customs, so I'm happy this way!

On Wednesday afternoon I have two hot friends who are coming in and will model for me. I think they're as excited as I am. They went on a shopping spree last week-end and bought all kinds of clothes and shoes (I believe they spent more than I did for the studio - LOL!) for the shoots.

I`ve got all kinds of techniques I want to try. I'm pretty much gonna shoot on the white seamless and experiment, experiment, and experiment a lot.

Was a long time coming, but I wanted to share the news and happiness with you guys Thanks a lot to all those who helped answer my questions!

Will surely post pictures next week

Canadian girls, especially QC girls, have a reputation to be beautiful. Ask Kringle, I'm sure he will agree with me wholeheartedly.

Will post pictures for sure

Congrats! Starting with one light is a good idea. I have 5 heads here, but only ever use a single light 95% of the time. Keeping it simple is key

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Where is it, Chicoutimi or do you travel to the studio?

No kidding. That's a great space. I presume that you're putting your backdrops along the narrow wall (15 ft.) to have more flexibility when shooting (longer/shorter lenses, DOF control, etc.)?

Since I'm in sabbatical for a year (took a pause from the long 80h work weeks!!!)
Excellent news. You'll have time to nicely begin to perfect your skills.

The medium may be the message but the subject matter is what really seals the deal.

Just remember to relax and have fun so you're assured of getting some real keepers. Get all serious and the shoot will probably go down the toilet.

Will surely post pictures next week
Can't wait to see what you come up with, especially with those wonderful QC girls!!!

Again, congrats.

My studio for the next 10 months will be in Laval

Yup, the backdrop is along the 15ft wall so I can go deeper and play with DOF. Especially with a white seamless, your subjects needs to be 5ft from the white seamless to render it black.

And the K10D isn't a pro camera and has a slower sync speed than other cameras (most have 1/250 whereas I have 1/180) so I might need to get the subject 7ft from the background to render it black to kill all ambient.

If black is what I really need I might just put a black muslin over the roll of papers if its too difficult to do it with the white seamless...

That's a bit of a commute!

Among my rolls of paper I had a black one and it was so much easier than having to deal with all of the light spills and reflected light. I've been thinking that, with the advent of digital processing, a key-lime paper might be very interesting to play with for colour keyed overlays (put your wonderful QC ladies in Germany).

Most of all, have fun with it!

I've moved home back in Laval during my Uni break... it's only 10min away now

I already have a black muslin that is wide enough to put over the roll and that I could just clamp on around the pipe (I have 12ft pole (2x 6ft PVC) and my seamless roll is 9ft wide...) so I might end up using this... changing rolls in-between shots is not time productive!
