Any one have any guesses when HDTV will be the normal format? What I mean is all channels will be HD and the networks will not be touting that it's in HD. Please forgive if this has been posted already. -- The beatings will continue, until morale improves. |

| I have no industry inside knowledge but I don't think it will not happen any time soon. HDTV occupies more bandwidth then SDTV. More SD channels can be carried over a given channel capacity then HD. Unless there is strong demand for HD makes economic sense to stay with SD as it allow more channels for a given bandwidth.
This is very different then the transition from Black and White to Color.

2 edits | I remember watching shows like Home Improvement back in the early 90's and when the show started there would be this "In Stereo Where Available". Then "In Surround Sound where Available". You don't see that any more. I'm wondering when HDTV will go away also.

@comcast.net | reply to flibby3655 I don't think you can buy a standard def TV any longer, not even at ChinaMart.
So most existing SDTVs will prolly be in a landfill in 5 years. |

So most existing SDTVs will prolly be in a landfill in 5 years. Doesn't matter if the TVs at home are HD or not. Broadcasters will take their time going to HD because it's a costly venture. You can't just replace the cameras when you go HD, you need to replace nearly everything in every studio to make it worthwhile. That could cost in the millions of dollars.
Broadcasters are going to take their time. Especially in fringe markets. Content producers are going to do the same. |
