[Free] Need Good FREE .zip program.

Need to know a good. Easy to use zip file program. I don't really want a "trial" version either. I have Windows XP home.
My 98SE came with winzip. This one does not. Thanks

My favourite freebie is TUGZip (»www.tugzip.com/). However, it's no longer being updated. Instead, I'd go with Izarc if you like WinZIP look and feel, or 7-Zip which would be my second choice.

Windows XP has a zip file program. Right-click in any folder or on the desktop, choose to make an "Compressed (zip) Folder" and name it AnythingYouWant.zip. Drag files onto the folder icon to add, or open the folder by double-clicking and then drag files to or from the folder.

a lot yes but why I like Izarc
7-zip has a crappy right click tab no good gui, good compression
Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, MSI, WIM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS

Izarc has a nice cleaner right click looking tab better gui
7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BIN, BZ2, BZA, C2D, CAB, CDI, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, IMG, ISO, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MDF, MBF, MIM, NRG, PAK, PDI, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO.

It always depends on what you need it for but 7-zip in my opinion needs some serious work.

For a very simple ZIP program try "JustZIPit"

»free-backup.info/justzipit.html

Only works with ZIP files just like Win98SE's ZIP utility.

FunnyBones,

You 7zip list is a little short.

My free working copy of 7zip indicates it can unpack the following:

7z, arj, bz2, bzip2, cab, cpio, deb, gz, gzip, iso, lha, lzh, rar, rpm, split, swm, tar, taz, tbz, tbz2, tgz, tpz, wim, z, zip and more...

I think these are opened source compression formats. I could be wrong.

Another vote for 7zip.

7-zip unzip

Izarc unzip
A side by side view of the newest 7-zip and Izarc

I dont hate 7 zip but just compare and choose what you like.

Both have 256-bit AES encryption
Both have build-in multilanguage support

Izarc has multiple archives spanning disks
7-zip has good compression

Not free, but I really like WinRar.... I actually spent the $30 for it because I use it so much.

What exactly is a "right-click tab"? Are you talking about the shell extension context menu? 7-Zip's looks just like WinZip's, and it's configurable (you can hide menu items that you don't use). That context menu would be my main concern in switching to another app. I'd also like one that lets me copy (Ctrl+C) from the GUI and paste into Explorer, which seems pretty simple to implement and XP's built-in archiver already does it.

izarc

izarc menu

Are you talking about the shell extension context menu? yes

Plus the gui looks like something a 5 year old would make. lol
compare

I will use 7-zip if they update it later but right now im happy with Izarc....

I know I will never hear the end of it but as I have said it is all about what you need it for and what it will do for you. If your happy with 7-zip enjoy and if your happy with izarc enjoy no need to make a fuss.
