I would strongly recommend 7Zip. Ive tried WinZip and WinRAR in the past, and 7Zip is WAY better than both.

Power archiver 6 - freeware, the interface is essentially the same as Winzip.

Link to download: »oldversion.com/program.php?n=powarc

- Everything prior to version 7 is freeware.

another iZarc vote from me. Have never used 7-Zip, but was wondering if it can make self extracting Zip files?

Also, what about the built in one for XP? Is that not available in the Home edition?

How about an older copy of WinRar: »[Free] Fully Registered WinRAR 3.51 (non-upgradeable) Downloading key to desktop, right clicking and selecting "open" should register too.

7zip is the best *real* free program out there.
It also has pretty good encryption as well-- "Strong AES-256 encryption in 7z and ZIP formats".
both have that but not 7z in izarc it supports aes-256 in zip and jar.

With all the file formats izarc is the best unzipper but with compression you can't go wrong with good ole 7zip.

So for a all rounder not using compression Izarc wins hands
down for a freebie.

Compare them all

7Zip is open source. Check sourceforge. org. Been using it for 10 years, it even takes care of unzipping rars.
so does izarc now

since they updated im impressed.

7zip

izarc

izarc menu

7zip menu
Are you talking about the shell extension context menu? yes

Plus the gui looks like something a 5 year old would make. lol
compare

I will use 7-zip if they update it later but right now im happy with Izarc....

I know I will never hear the end of it but as I have said it is all about what you need it for and what it will do for you. If your happy with 7-zip enjoy and if your happy with izarc enjoy no need to make a fuss.

7-zip has a crappy right click tab no good gui, good compression

Izarc has a nice cleaner right click looking tab better gui
What exactly is a "right-click tab"? Are you talking about the shell extension context menu? 7-Zip's looks just like WinZip's, and it's configurable (you can hide menu items that you don't use). That context menu would be my main concern in switching to another app. I'd also like one that lets me copy (Ctrl+C) from the GUI and paste into Explorer, which seems pretty simple to implement and XP's built-in archiver already does it.

7-zip unzip

Izarc unzip
A side by side view of the newest 7-zip and Izarc

I dont hate 7 zip but just compare and choose what you like.

Both have 256-bit AES encryption
Both have build-in multilanguage support

Izarc has multiple archives spanning disks
7-zip has good compression
