[northeast] Might be torrent throttling, might not be? Help!

Hi everyone. I am new here and have a nagging issue I hope to get resolved. I am very happy with the new 10mbps/2mbps Fios service I now have from Verizon. The ping is wonderful, and the speed is fantastic. But when it comes to bittorrent, it gets a bit strange. I should mention that I'm using the MI424WR wireless router that Verizon provided.

I was downloading a big ole beta EXE file the other day, via utorrent, only to watch the network activity (in taskmanager) do some strange dances. It would download at a very steady rate for a few minutes, and then just drop off to no activity (the chart would end abruptly with a cliff-like drop), and the slowly crawl up to the same speed again. It would do this about every 10 minutes. Eventually, the internet crapped out altogether. So, I switched the modem off and on, and everything was back to normal.

I have read the review on this site about the router I'm using, and understand that 96 is about the limit you want to set your torrent program to for the number of global connections. I'm just wondering, could this strange kind of network activity be throttling? Or is it because of too many connections in the utorrent program?

Also, I have a quick side question. How do I know if my ONT is grounded or not?

Thank you for your time and any help is greatly appreciated!!

Well, Verizon is not known to throttle anything, so it sounds like you're having the well known ActionTec problem of those things not liking torrents. When the internet starts to get slow or stops working, can you visit the ActionTec's setup? If you can, time how long it takes. A slow load usually means it's loaded down, where as a fast load might just be it ran out of NAT room. Also, posting up the ActionTec's error logs might tell us what is going on as well. Make sure you try to grab the log BEFORE you reset the router or you will delete the log.

Re: [northeast] Might be torrent throttling, might not be? Help!

Thanks for the help! I have not tried to re-create this problem with utorrent since, so I don't know how fast the setup page will load. I have a good feeling that the load will be fast, meaning that it just ran out of NAT room. But it seems that after too many of those NAT overloads, it will crash the router and you need to restart it.

Since I haven't tried to re-create the problem again, I can't give you the error log. But when it does happen again, I'll post it up.

When this drop off happens, utorrent says that "whatever connection to whomever was closed". This is what made me think it could be throttling, but it turns out that utorrent just says that, even if the connection was closed unexpectedly.

I have since limited the number of global connections to about 90 and have had fewer problems. But this sacrifices speed, of course. I might consider bridging this router if problems continue. Thanks again!

It's not Verizon, it's the router, the NAT table floods easily when using torrent clients and certain online games. Search this forum on:

NAT table
bit torrent
steam

and you'll a gazillion posts on this topic/issue

1) you can try Azureas -- its defaults settings seem more reasonable for this issue.

2) you can try replacing the router. There's some good FAQs on the topic: »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ and scroll down to the ones on replacing the Actiontec, looking for your setup (e.g. with FiOS TV, etc)

Re: [northeast] Might be torrent throttling, might not be? Help!

Thanks! It definitely is the router. I haven't had a problem with any games yet, but if I do, I may just test the WiFi radio distance by placing the router in the middle of the STREET!!! Let me ask ya, do ya feel lucky, router?

Ok Ok, I won't do that, but I will try Azures to see if that works better. I have limited the number of connections to 80 or 90 and it doesn't happen as often. It's almost a hit and miss thing.

If I really get fed up, I will consider bridging the thing and using the good old WRT54G that I used to use. Thanks again!

..or you could lower the connections on your torrent app till it stops blowing out the table, since 96 is the limit, 96 in the torrent app would almost guarantee exceeding the table.

Re: [northeast] Might be torrent throttling, might not be? Help!

Thanks for the advice. I have had luck in lowering the number of global connections. 96 seems to be too many, but I don't think it's that much above the limit. I will continue to tinker.

Most people find better performance out of products other than bittorrent. That little frog works wonders...

Thanks for the suggestion. But that little FROG likes eating too many of my CYCLES. µ however, don't eat as much.
