It's the copy protection built into the Tivo and SONY tv. Easy solution is to not use the HDMI cable and switch to the component video cables. SONY takes the rights of movie companies and others seriously and utilize the copy protection anytime it comes up. My guess is you were attempting to record a movie of SONY's or one of their T.V. shows. It wouldn't happen recording the local news.

You shouldn't be able to notice a difference in video quality changint to component video.

I think it is the cable box, but not TW's doing. All HD cable boxes have copy protection built in so that you can't get a signal from HDMI and potentially pirate a "perfect digital copy". The component cable suggestion is a good one.

heh i can recored from firewire to get a perfect digtal copy
