| [General] I Need a New Wireless VOIP Router, Suggestions?
I have Vonage and the free wireless Dlink router they gave me last year is dying(I keep having to reset it because it freezes and what not). So, I am looking for a new router. I don't know if I should look for a 802.11N router (not really sure what the difference is). I use wireless internet ocassionally for my laptop and Wii, I use one PC connected directly, all the time. I live in a small apartment in a large building, so it doesn't have to have the best range, but easy security would be great. I also use Utorrent alot. If it does anything special for that great, but if it doesn't that's fine too. I know to just stop downloading when I have to make a call.
So, what do you think? |

| reply to Truthisone I second Tomato on any hardware that will support it. Mostly Linksys and Buffalo but others as well. I have a WRT54G version 2 with Tomato and the QOS is the best I have tried. I tried Ipcop, PFsense, DD-WRT, D-Link (with their smart stream or whatever QOS is called in it) and Tomato did the best job. WRT54G versions less than 5 work well and can be found on Ebay pretty cheap. |

@QWEST.NET | reply to Truthisone A router with ubicom stream engine for QOS should work very well. Zywall and trendnet make some I know. |

Also, is it hard to set it up with Vonage? What is the process like? |

| You are shortchanging yourself if you don't look at the Asus WL-520GU. Great price at zipzoomfly. It uses the latest Broadcom chipset with excellent speed and wireless range.
I use these exclusively for deploying VOIP with a Linksys ATA using Tomato firmware. You have to flash to DD-WRT first, then to Tomato. |

Also, is it hard to set it up with Vonage? What is the process like? Router is essentially an internet splitter. It doesn't care about Vonage or anything else for instance. |

| reply to Truthisone Ok, I think I'm starting to get it. An ATA is what makes the VOIP possible and I will just connect it with a regular wireless router.(I know that the models you suggested will work best)
Is it hard to setup an ATA to accept Vonage? Do you have an example of what it involves? Will Vonage give me a hard time that I won't be using one of their products? |

Will Vonage give me a hard time that I won't be using one of their products? As RockyBB already told you in another thread you started, Vonage is not a BYOD (bring-your-own-device) provider. You can't use just any VOIP device and expect it to work with Vonage. You can use your own router with Vonage, but if the router also contains a VOIP device, you can't use that with Vonage.
Some of the posts above make general recommendations about routers. But the real issue here is that you need a VOIP device provided by Vonage. So you need to talk to them about replacing your failing router/ATA. I think there would be less confusion if this thread was moved to the Vonage forum. |

@QWEST.NET | reply to Truthisone I would suggest the ATA from Vonage. Just an adapter for running the VOIP. Then your own router to set up and use how you want. |

First - are you sure that the router is faulty if you have done no troubleshooting (fault isolation?). D-Link is, IMO, 3rd tier quality.
If you must get a new w-router, a good choice would be Linksys WRH54G. Low cost. Stable. Good user documents. |

Thanks |

IMO, a good value and not useless overkill, for a replacement, is a Linksys WRH54G. |

| reply to Truthisone Ok, I will try to be more clear about the problem.
Usually it happens when I'm surfing the web or using Yahoo IM. Suddenly, I won't be able to connect to the internet and Windows give me that icon that says "There is limited or no connectivity" The lights on the router stop blinking (normally they blink). I don't get a dial tone. If I pickup my phone there is just silence.
It hasn't happened in a few days. Hopefully it's a miracle, but I doubt it since I didn't do anything.
According to Vonage, the firmware is automatically updated or I would have tried to do that myself.
I hope this helps, I don't know what else to say because like I said it hasn't happened in a few days. |
