You're on Extreme I assume, right?. What are your downstream speeds like?

have you tried running the shaw speed test?

Ive had shaws extreme package for 4 months now and the exact same thing has happened to me just in the last week (Sept1-5.08). My upload speeds went from 100-129kb/s uploading to 50-60kb/s when using torrent applications. Ive tried randomizing my torrent tcp port every time, tried reassigning a new ip address by resetting my modem after changing my routers MAC, and by forcing ecryption of all my outgoing p2p packets. NOTHING has helped dodge the bandwidth throttling they are applying to my connection. Since in this case there is no way to fool the 'packet shaping' software and algorithms Im assuming this is manually applied by the system administrators on a per user basis. Because there is no way i could be caught otherwise. I guess they are (as of this week) selectively red flagging cable modem addresses of certain shaw cable users and rate capping speeds. If this continues for another week im dropping every service i have with shaw and switching cable companies.

Out of curiosity, what are the two of you getting for upload speeds through the Shaw and other speed tests?

And ObsidianParadox, Shaw is not selectively targetting you, nor throttling your connection. At present, this is not a practice of Shaw, and likely won't be within the foreseeable future.

Why is it everytime something changes slightly everyone thinks the 'big bad corporation' is out to get them?

Couldn't agree with you more Cogito. Paranoia may be a factor.

I think its lack of knowledge...mixed with people thinking they know everything.

Hm?

»shaw SLOW upload speed with bittorent

I've seen many posts about shaw throttling... and even some showing shaw admitted to it. Why else would they have DPI boxes? I don't actively follow it, so I'm not sure the specifics... some say it's done in saturated areas only, which may be the truth.. but who's the say the OP isn't in a saturated area?

I doubt theyre picking on certain users, more like certain over subscribed areas.

In saturated areas there is throttling, but it's a blanket throttle for all non time sensitive information. They do not target P2P traffic specifically.

People post about a lot of things. It doesn't mean there's a lick of truth to their speculation.

It also doesn't mean someone is being paranoid :P

He might be in one of the saturated areas. Upload suddenly dropping speed in half suggests throttling, or node being too full...And if they throttle uploads for nodes being full, then it stands to reason he's probably being throttled .

That was not what he was implying... nor blatantly stating. Regardless, I agree with you completely on the latter part, though those are not the only potential causes.

Same thing here, used to upload torrents at 115 KBs, now usually 20-30. and this happened around sept 1 or so. I still get about 115kBs uploading to rapidshare.

My utorrent has the encryption on, but I heard deluge and some chinese torrent thingee have better encryption methods, but deluge for windows doesnt work for me and I dont see a deluge for the version of linux I have (hardy hotrod) as for the chinese one, just got a bunch of crazy adds, couldn't get any torrents going, might have helped if I understood chinese.

If I find something that works Ill report it here, and IF someone else finds anything I hope they do the same

Same problem for me (Edmonton).

I have the high-speed package and have been using torrents for years without problem. Suddenly around the beginning of this month I cannot get over 10kb/sec uploads when I used to max out my upload speed (60kb/sec). This is true even when I am the only seeder on a particular torrent, so it's not just a case of trying to seed an already overseeded torrent.

Various speed tests show that my speeds are normal, it's just BT traffic that is getting the axe.

I have exactly the same problem. At the time I just installed a new router and I assumed that was the problem. 3 weeks trying to sort out a problem that turns out to be Shaw. Three other friends have noticed the same problem. Utterly disgraceful.

I contacted Shaw, it took them nearly two days to respond only to have them not answer my question as to whether they are shaping bittorrent or not.
All they told me is that I should be getting faster speeds and that it is a problem at my end. I have run torrents in both windows and linux with identical results so it is not OS dependent. I got a short burst of 90kB/s last night for about 5 minutes so connection is capable.

Bye Bye Shaw, getting a Teksavvy line connected next week. I have many friends at uni who are also having the same problem and are all going to jump the shaw ship in the next few weeks.
If you are not happy with Shaw do not ring up and abuse them or act inpolite. Taking your business elsewhere is the only thing that they understand. If I convince 10 people to leave shaw who have a connection similar to mine that is $7000 a year out of shaws pockets.

Enjoy having to abide by Telus' laws, then. In Alberta, Teksavvy has to get its bandwidth from Telus, just as it has to get it from Rogers out in the east, and thus is subject to the same at-whim rules and caps.

I am on Shaw Extreme in Edmonton. I can report upload speeds working perfectly fine here on private torrent tracker.

I'm not sure if I have noticed decreased upload speeds but when I try to stream to my shoutcast server, I get an error "can not send data fast enough" they keep telling me its on my end but i highly doubt it or its the servers, yet the servers work fine for everyone else that streams. I upgraded, bought new router... still the same problem. I'm very cheesed, had no problem 3/4 weeks ago.

cgyuser

@chevrontexaco.com

I have the same problem. Only yesterday has the upload speed recovered to 90k/sec but im not sure for how long. i also find that my download speed on well seeded torrents (mvgroup.org) where i would normally download btw 300-400k/sec go at a maximum 60k/sec per torrent if im lucky...

There is definitely something going on.. Since Sept started is when i noticed the decrease in speed. This was the same time when i upgraded to SP3.. could it be SP3 possibly? My tcp half open connections are set at 80 so its not that bottleneck..

speedtest.net reports my download speeds at 15 meg down with PB and ~980k up..
