| reply to gate1975mlm well I was digging it just a little... something different you know. But in less than 24 hours after installing suffered a system stop/crashola computer go boom! Haven't seen a blue screen in years. Coincidence? Perhaps. But since Chrome was the only change to my system I made, off it went like pronto. the GoogleUpdaterservice proved a bit challenging but it's gone with the wind as well.
Now to be fair, the "BAD_POOL_CALLER" as detailed in the minidump analysis seemed to point to vsdatant.sys which as you know is a ZoneAlarm driver. But since I've had no problems whatsoever with this driver (ver6.1.744.001) and since Chrome and the Google tentacles were freshly installed. I've opted to get rid of Chrome for the time being. If I get another "BAD_POOL_CALLER" crash very soon, I may look at Chrome less accusingly. -- "in flagrante delicto" |

Yes these are exaggerations - but they are not limitations under that clause. Until Google removes these sections from their EULA I will not be using Chrome. Same here. I'll stick with Firefox instead of Google's spyware disguised as a browser. Welcome to 3 weeks ago.

1 edit | reply to WFO It does do intensive reads a writes to the System Volume Information folder during any idle times that all by itself is enough to scare me off from it. I followed Pyr0's link to his full article. In his article he shows a screen capture of a chrome.exe thread writing to a file in the System Volume Information folder. I'm really curious that this can happen. By default (in XP) only the System has any permissions to the folder. Not even an administrator can open the folder, let alone write to it. Perhaps Vista is different?
Link to screen capture here: »www.planetx64.com/index.php?opti···Id=14591
I setup admin permissions for the folder so I could take a look inside. I found only two files, both of which pre-date the Chrome install so it doesn't appear my installation is writing there. Perhaps it is because I installed Chrome in a limited account? Perhaps Chrome edits permissions to the folder if the installation is performed in an admin account?
It's a dandy place to tuck something away with the folder locked up even to an administrator. |

3 edits | reply to gate1975mlm It doesn't matter if they changed the EULA. It still behaves as spyware. Somehow the "You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig." seems applicable here.
[quote name='Athildja' date='Sep 11 2008, 05:18 PM' post='347169'] according to people I talked to, there are many many more exploits that are left overs from Safari 3. It seems to me that Chrome (much like the EULA) is hobbled together from other apps. It does do intensive reads a writes to the System Volume Information folder during any idle times that all by itself is enough to scare me off from it. I have outlawed its use where I work and others I know in the field have followed suit.

| reply to AmeritecTech said by AmeritecTech :said by palbri :See attached. Nothing! That's really weird. I don't understand how we can keep finding so many inconsistencies between the same version and build. Maybe you need to install Java or something else like that it depends on. I have the 6u10 Java installed, which is what the Chrome Help says has to be installed for Java to work right in Chrome. Normally in the About, you should see a thing at the bottom that says "Checking for updates" and then a message either that its up to date or that there's a new update available. I just updated Java..still not displaying. However, it DOES display on an XP box and not this Vista box; Vista could be the culprit? |
