[new forum] Gay / Lesbian Talk

I want to propose a "Gay/Lesbian" forum. Ok, just here me out for a second before you respond.

Background
It's people like me who made this site what it is today. After 8+ years and 5,000+ posts on this awesome site, it's pretty much my go to place every morning. Hell, I even bring up this page while my coffee is brewing at 5:15 AM... This site has expanded way beyond DSL and Cable and FiOS to something much more.

Sure, we were all originally drawn to this place because of our technical roots and we continue to retain that today. I, more than anyone, love reading about the latest developments with Vista or how I can avoid approaching the latest Comcast bandwidth cap...

But, a decade later, this site has expanded into a more social place for technical minded people to post about other interests.

Current State
Blue and Red rooms... Pub and Cooler... Health & Fitness... These are but a few of the forums where people who enjoy the site can also find places to chat with other like minded people. The precedent has been set. Nobody can argue that. The issue is how far can we take it...?

According to our own site statistics, there are over a million verified accounts here. Even if only a fraction of those post to the forums, and a fraction of those are people like me, and even a fraction of those want to engage, we still have thousands of people who would contribute to a gay, lesbian, and/or alternative lifestyle forum.

Main Argument
The idea of this forum isn't to separate people like us, rather it's to have a place to talk about things only we're interested in talking about.

You wouldn't talk about setting up a DSL connection in the Digital Imaging forum, right? Likewise, I don't want to talk about the upcoming gay rights support league meeting in the Sprint Mobile Broadband forum...

Opposition
Sure, you may not agree or like the lifestyle. I'll give you that. Fair enough. However, one could argue that it may keep some of these kid of topics out of the other forums. Whatever.

I'm not asking if you agree with me, rather, I'm asking if you agree with the principle of creating a forum that would allow like minded people a place to gather and talk about issues that generally wouldn't fit into another forum.

Thanks for your time. Thoughts?

Sure, you may not agree or like the lifestyle.
I don't set myself in judgement over the lifestyle. And I have no objections to it being discussed. However, I don't believe that dslr is the place for such a discussion.

The trouble with that subject area is that it inflames some people, and discussions quickly go off-topic. It would be easier to manage that in a site dedicated to the subject area, than in a site such as this one.

Requests for a new forum should be a poll. Then ignore the "no" votes. That would at least be a bit more accurate in determining interest.

It makes absolutely no sense, and never did, to collect "Object" votes from random passers-by on the subject of a themed forum, which only those interested will ever see. What is the point of objecting? There are what, 200+ forums here, and I have six on my list. Why would I object to a forum that I wouldn't ever even know existed?

I could pontificate on the problems with such a forum, but I don't really feel like it this evening.

I simply object to this forum unless they make me a forum for married, heterosexual, Christian white men.

Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?

Re: [new forum] Gay / Lesbian Talk

Can you give me a few examples of topics one would bring up in such forum? With all due respect.

Until then; *object*

I think my proposition of a Flashlight forum would hold more ground as it could be a subforum to Electronics.

Military forums? No.

The hypothetical forum suggested? No.

A forum for asians? No.

A forum for blacks? No.

A forum for Jews? No.

A forum for Muslims? No.

A forum for whites? No.

A forum for those who prefer their sexual partners fit the hirsute category? No.

The only reasonable answer could and should be...No.

DSLReports, Not DSLAndEveyOtherForumUnderTheSunReports

Note: I have nothing against LBGT people, i just don't feel it fits into a technical forum.

And as for the current trend of "Lets ignore the OBJECTS!"

If the MODs decide to change the rules of this forum to make objecting bad, then ill stop, but until then:

Make your suggestion clear so that others understand it. Those discussing the suggested feature can follow up with *sign* or *object*. Supplying reasons with your post is not necessary but is helpful to others.

Let's keep our sexual lives to ourselves. There are plenty of other places to go to discuss things like this.

I would not use this forum, and would not normally leave a sign/object to a request like this, but I wanted to say your post was well presented.

Judging by how many of the gay/les threads get locked i would say theres no worry about this ever coming to be. if it does however, it should be like the health/lifestyle forum where you have to apply for access.

Torn on this one. I do think your request was very well stated on both occasions, and at the very least I thank you for that compared to some requests I have seen.

For me, no issues with the lifestyle. I have seen many forums over the years pop up that are non-tech related. Do I think there could be a forum here for the LGB? I sure do. But I shudder to think about the amount of trolling that would occur. I would think it would turn into a moderator nightmare.

I wonder if it could be implemented like the Lifestyle forum, where you have to gain access. Maybe.

I would have to say cautiously *sign* but knowing it could be a very sticky point.
