Help importing video from Mini DV to my laptop

I'm trying to upload some video of the kids and burn it on to DVD from our Mini DV camera just to have it as a back up of sorts. I see video fine but there is no sound, Samsung tech support is a joke Power Producer (Cyberlink) support is a joke...This is a new laptop so I know it's not the sound card, I have a brand new fire wire cable and an old one, I've tried both, I've also tried to get sound on my laptop here (running Vista) and my desktop out in back (running XP).

So two questions:

One - Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to why I am not getting any sound? I also tried using Windows player to import the video and still no sound (although a nice picture)

Dos...Cyberlink came bundled with the computer, is there a good free (or relatively inexpensive alternative) that I can use to capture and edit video from my Mini DV that will provide me with sound or that would at least allow me to trouble shoot some more!?

Thanks!

did you install the camera software? sounds like you're missing an audio codec.

I've had the camera for about 5 years....so no I haven't downloaded it, but if I remember right it did not come with any software for the computer, although I'm sure it did, not sure why I didn't think of that. Thank you. I'll hit up Samsung's web site and look for it!

**EDIT**

Well there are no downloads for this camera..I guess my next question is, is there anywhere, where I can download varios CODECS to see if I'm perhaps missing one, which probably is the case.

Got a brand name and model of Mini DV?
Have you tried just plain-jane importing the video to a folder and playing it with something like VLC or GOM Player?

It's a Samsung SCD-67, it's about 5 years old or so. I'll try listening to the file with VLC.

**EDIT**

No luck with VLC either, no sound. I got a hold of Samsung again, because I can not find the disc that came with the camera....I have a request for them to send me a copy of it (heaven forbid they have it for download somewhere)...so now it's just a hurry up and wait process.

I'm finding it quite odd that the audio isn't working. By it's nature, MiniDV stores it's audio as PCM either at 32khz or 48khz. Either way, PCM doesn't require any additional codecs past what's included with windows and CERTAINLY VLC should handle it no problem.

I'd start checking your sound card and make sure it's working and playing back other audio. See if the audio will work playing on the camcorder or through a video out cable to a tv or something. See what audio settings you have set on the camera, etc..

Btw, I do assume you are using a firewire connection from the camera to import the video? If you are using usb, that introduces a whole slew of issues. The format these cameras outputs over usb varies between brand and model as they often re-encode on the fly to something like mpeg2 or something more compressed than DV to transfer in realtime over the usb connection.

I am too..Sound card works fine, all other forms of media player on the laptop here. I hear audio through the camera itself if I'm just watching the video on the display, and it also works if I plug the camera into the T.V.

I'm at a total loss.

Oh and I am using a fire wire. It's really bugging me to no end.

An update of sorts..I've tried and I've tried and I simply do not get any sound when importing the video to my computer..This really saddens me because I'm trying to get the video of our kids on the computer then burn them to DVD...If anyone has any kind of other suggestions please let me know...If I could afford a new camera I would just buy one at this point.

@verizon.net
Have you checked your sound/audio control panel to see if maybe a needed channel is turned all the way down or muted?

I have used WinDV with success, don't know if it would make a difference for you.

Yeah it was one of the first things I checked..and nothing was muted. I thought for awhile it might be the firewire, but this is a brand new one and the old one also doesn't work.

Thank you. I tried it out. I like the simplicity of it, but to my dismay...still no sound...Waiting for a friend of mine to give it a whirl on his laptop, but I'm sure I will get the same results.

I'm assuming the audio output from the camera is a separate line from the video?
You could always try the different input jacks of your computer (assuming you haven't already) or, again, go to the audio Control Panel and try the different default sound recording devices (remembering of course what your current settings are).
And try the different audio rendering settings (32k, 44100, 48k), as Vchat20 See Profile alluded to.

Seems like some combo ought to work-- but, maybe not . . . .

Are you using Fire Wire (ieee 1394) to bring in the video?
If you are running XP and plug in a 1394 device Windows Movie maker should show up. I didn't even know it was on the computer until I plugged in the video camera. If you're not using fire wire how are you moving the video?

@AB: Firewire basically takes the DV bitstream off the camera as per the way it's stored on the tape and feeds it to the computer. This includes both audio and video. Audio is always Stereo PCM, 32khz or 48khz, as per the standard.

Sound info
Using WinDV to capture the file: Did you go to the configuration options and set it to capture as AVI Type 2?

After you capture the file with WinDV right click on it and select properties, then summary tab and see if audio info is shown. Example pic attached.

If you like I will email you a small file (12.9MB) saved with WinDV from my camcorder and you can play this AVI file with Windows Media Player and see if you can hear the audio.
That way you can determine if it is a problem with your file capture or a problem with the computer playing the sound. You can PM me your email.

Some of the files that I used the program to capture the files with did not show any audio properties at all (no bit rate)..using WinDV it does show a bit rate, but still no sound.

I promise I'm not totally dumb and just have something on "mute" I've gone through and everything is either turned all the way up at this point or mid point, but nothing on mute..

I sent you a PM with my email address. Thank you everyone for your help on this..hopefully we can get it figured out!

OK, per your email we know you had no problem playing the file I sent which was AVI type 2 with 16 bit PCM audio. So that helps rule out a lot.

There are many reports of Samsung cams having no audio on files captured thru firewire if audio is set on 16 bit.

Go into the camera menu and set audio to 12 bit.
Use WinDV and capture a little: 1st as AVI type 1 and then as AVI type 2.

Then record a little new footage at 12 bit and use WinDV and capture it, both as type 1 and type 2.

Play all 4 files in Windows Media Player and VLC.

Report the results please.

Well.....When video is recorded in 12 bit it I have audio in AVI 1 or AVI 2. As well as in VLC...the part recorded in 16 bit audio and played back (Avi 1 and 2) will not play but as soon as the 12 bit audio kicks on there is sound. Which is good news...going forward now I will record in 12 bit...but how to get all the old video off that was recorded in 16 bit?

That was such a huge help though!

I'll have to do a little research. I think there's a way you can run it thru a conversion process or two and end up with audio you can hear, albeit somewhat degraded.

The easiest would be if you have a relative or friend with a miniDV camcorder of a different brand, newer model, that you could borrow to play the tape and capture from and see if it works. Some people have reported success with that.
