That's the point.
I demand a 'Straight Lifestyle' forum if this goes into place.
Ugh...
I have a hard time typing that as it sounds so ridiculous.
Just like the request for a gay/lesbian/transsexual/bisexual forum. |

That's exactly the point. The reason it sounds ridiculous is that it implies a choice, and every straight person knows that they made no such choice. |

| reply to Johnny And I disagree with the fundamental argument there, but this is not the place for that.
Simply put, DSLR isn't the place for those kinds of discussions. Either Straight or Homosexual.
I'd never have suggested the creation of other forums around here, like our 'seniors' forum. That just creates cliques and a hostile environment.
But I digress. I really don't think this forum should be here, but ultimately, the choice falls into justin's capable hands. |

And on the other issue, there's no need for a "straight lifestyle" forum for the same reason there is no White Entertainment Television or National Association for the Advancement of White People or United White College Fund. |

And the ultimate hypocrisy comes out: We want to be Equal, but we want our own brand and our own place to discuss it.
This thread, yet again with controversial requests, has turned into a great example of why it should not be on DSLR. Being part of the GLBT community does not some how change your opinion about how Comcast or TWC sucks, or that FIOS is the second coming of god. So why have a separate forum for them? |

said by Rombus : So why have a separate forum for them? Because on this site there are discussions not related to tech stuff in any way. So if some people want to have a "lifestyle" discussion they can do it without the worry that some homophobic user accidentally stumbles upon it while reading tech topics and makes a big deal about it. If they want to have it, let them have it... how does it hurt anyone? |

Just like the request for a gay/lesbian/transsexual/bisexual forum. Well, it's just not a different lifestyle. The "Gay Lifestyle" is a fabrication useful for gays who wanted something more to identify with and for straights to use to compartmentalize a group of people.
The comments in this topic illustrate this thinking perfectly.
GLBT people might want a Forum because they believe that straight people will react badly to expressions about their unique issues -- or even their existance. "We don't want to see it!" is the message being heard. It's the same reason gay men generally don't hold hands with their partner when walking down the street in most cities.
But it self-defeats both ways. When people separate themselves on the basis of any difference, they lengthen the time it takes for people with issues about that to come from intolerance to understanding.
Whether or not anyone likes it, any segment of creation naturally lives on a continuum. All of us are different, but all of us are linked in one way or another. Whenever someone looks at someone else and says, "you're weird," they're ignoring the overwhelming majority of qualities that make them alike. -- Robb Topolski -= funchords.com =- Hillsboro, Oregon More features, more fun, Join BroadbandReports.com, it's free...

1 edit | reply to Johnny While understanding lifestyle is NOT the correct term, you have to say, out of all the forums that DSLR currently has - wouldn't relationship threads and topics best be discussed in the HF&L Forum?
There have been a few relationship threads in there.

See the sample questions listed above.
If they posted those questions in a "regular" forum, the nuts would trash the thread beyond help and nobody would get any answers to their questions. |

Ahem .. the "nuts"? I resemble that remark which in a way I am glad we have the HF&L forum. It is not a public general forum and it can be watched/moderated very closely. There have been some sensitive topics in there that were handled very well with maybe one or two problems within them - seriously. |

Not if, it HAS happened, I have seen several such topics posted, and the "nuts" crawl out of the woodwork and crap all over the thread, forcing, in my opinion, the mods to either lock it, or as has happened a few times, delete it outright.
Sad fact of this site, there are too many "children" around here of the adult persuasion who find it quite funny to trash any thread they like... -- RIAA/MPAA... Bite me!!!! In constant search for intelligent life on Earth! |
