[modem/router] Westell 6100 F and Linksysezxs55w 5 port switch

I had a working Verizon DSL configuration that included a WireSpeed DSL modem and Linksys ezxs55w 5 port switch, with several computers hardwired and a Linksys wap54g access point with one wireless computer. Recently we had an electrical storm that knocked out the original DSL modem.

Verizon replaced with a Westell 6100F DSL modem/router. I have been successful in getting one directly connected “Ethernet” computer to connect to internet but when I attempt to connect the Linksys ezxs55w 5 port switch, I am not successful. DSL modem has no data light and I am unable to connect to internet or even to administer the Westell DSL modem.

I have obtained the Westell DSL modem spec sheet and it indicates up to 253 users are supported with a user supplied Ethernet hub (which should translate to my Linksys ezxs55w 5 port switch) is this correct?

So my questions:

1. Is my assumption correct? I should be able to use the new Verizon supplied Westell 6100 F DSL modem and my Linksys ezxs55w 5 port switch?
2. What modifications are required to the DSL modem configuration to allow the switch to work? It appears many posts direct users to change VC configuration from PPoE to bridged mode when connecting a router, is this what I need to do?
3. Do I have to purchase a router? Such as the Linksys WRT54G? or some equivalent?

Thank you for any assistance.

Yes
None
No

You didn't bridge that modem, did you? You should have no problem inserting the switch. Check the IP of the Working computer. It should be a 192.168.1.X. If it is, there is no reason for the problem you're having.

Once you are able to get online with one PC directly connected to the 6100F, then adding a switch is all you should need to do to expand your network.

But the fact that the data light does not come on when the switch is attached indicates a problem with either the ethernet cable used or the switch itself - perhaps the lightning took it out as well.

My 55s have an uplink port. Are you sure you are bringing the inbound from the 6100 to the correct port.
