updated port 25 removal instructions?

It seems that the link to the left is out of date...I'm trying to help my sister use my mail server and need to open port 25. I found a page that has a checkbox by roaming around her account, but it is not checkable, and by clicking on the question mark it says something about needing to register first??

[She wants to use the same mail server I've been using for years through dslextreme].

Anyone know the proper procedure?

Thanks,

Julie

Hi,

I would be happy to see if Port 25 filter can be removed from the account in question. Please send me a PM with the account info for the account in question and I will fallow up with you once I have had a chance to look at the account.

Hi Julie,

The port 25 filter removal is included as part of the firewall tool inside the Member section of our site. You can select the Manage Firewall link under the Internet tab once logged into the Members section. From there you should be able to un-check the port 25 filter.

Thanks

George,

I was there and it was greyed out so it couldn't be changed.

Are there certain types of accounts where you can't use it?

Thanks,

Julie

If I remember correctly, there are some instances/networks where port 25 can not be disabled. If you send over her account information I would be happy to take a look.

Thanks

I had already pulled up the account. It is one of our networks where Port 25 cannot be opened by the customer. I have already opened a ticket to have port 25 opened on the account. It is the same network where we have trouble offering speeds faster then 1.5mb with ATT even if the customer qualifies for faster service.

Is there any way to tell when port 25 has opened? As of last night my sister was still having problems with outgoing mail (incoming using my domain's mail server was fine). We tried my domain's mail server, smtp.dslextreme.com and smtp.gmail.com, and nothing worked. She's not totally stuck, since she can send mail using webmail, just not through Outlook.

If you can tell me what **should** be working at this point I'll lead her through the settings. Too many variables right now!

To tell if port 25 is open have her open up a command prompt and type telnet smtp.yourdomain.com 25. If the connection opens successfully then it is enabled.

Thanks

If I try to use telnet (using Windows Vista) it gives me the error 'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

If anyone else wants to try this you have to do this first:
1. Click Start then select Control Panel.

2. Select Programs and Features.

3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.

4. Select the Telnet Client option.

5. Click OK.

6. A dialog box will appear to confirm installation. The telnet command should now be available.

My sister's husband followed all my instruction, and the result he got when he did telnet mail.domain.com 25 (that's my smtp server, uses "mail" not "smtp") was "connection failed."

When I did it from my computer at my house that exact command worked fine.

So I am guessing that port 25 hasn't yet been opened.

Hi,

I am showing port 25 is still blocked on the account. Our tier2 department has made attempts to contact her about the issue and has been unable to get in touch with her.

She works long hours...if you can get port 25 unblocked I'm sure I can take it from there.

Sorry to be such a bother on this issue, but support keeps telling my sister that they have opened port 25 (while she was on the phone with them). Then she tries the telnet command and it doesn't connect.

Given Zak's comments above, I doubt that the support personnel are able to open it while she's talking to them.

If port 25 cannot be opened for her account, please let me know!!

If it can be opened, please let **ME** know when it is opened, so I can set her mail account accordingly (having support call her in this instance is not as useful).

Thanks,

Julie

Why are we still worrying about port 25 being opened when the popmail for dslextreme has moved SMTP to ports 465 and 587? What are you doing that can't be solved by using the new ports-which are not blocked.

Because they need it?
For example, I need it being opened all the time.

If you want to SEND mail using your own mail server you need to have port 25 open. Simple for most, seems to be excessively difficult in this case for some reason.

I sent you a response via IM. I show that it is set properly on our end. She may need to disconnect and reconnect for the change to update. Can you have her reboot her computer and or router and modem and try again?
