Time zone problems: st516v6 firmware 7.4.3.2

SpeedTouch 516v6 firmware v7.4.3.2

Time zone set to:

(UTC -05:00) Eastern Time USA/Canada

won't stick. After the modem restarts, it resets itself to:

(UTC -05:00) Bogota, Lima, Quito

which is the same as Eastern Time but without DST. For more details you can look at post #3 and #4 here:

»ST 516v6 firmware 7.4.3.2 upgrade errors

What about if you just change that to:

UTC/GMT with "summer time" turned off.

»img150.imageshack.us/img150/1063···6tz8.png

This time zone sticks, it won't move after restart one notch up to Casablanca time.

I'm wondering what kind of effect, if any, setting the time zone to UTC/GMT might have on the connection. It seems that there should be none whatsoever, but who knows, the life in the tech world is full of surprises.

Hi,

I'm afraid i don't use this version anymore
and there's no reason for me to install it
again since tweaking with v6.1.0.5 became
a necessity over here lately... What i can
advise you to do is to take a close look at
'user.ini', looking for the "Wizard" keyword
inside. The .TPL "template" files found on
the CD are another avenue to investigate.

Thanks. I didn't find any references to the time zone in the Wizard section:

»img519.imageshack.us/img519/281/···7ta1.png

but there is one in the System section:

»img150.imageshack.us/img150/6995···2js6.png

settime timezone=-05:00 daylightsaving=enabled

This would suggest that any references to specific cities within a given time zone seen in the GUI can be safely ignored. The only thing that matters is the offset from UTC and the DST flag (on/off). The time zone:

(UTC -05:00) Bogota, Lima, Quito

should work just fine, as long as the DST flag is set to:

Summer Time: Yes

------
All the above can be confirmed when you go to Telnet. Leave [geotimezonename] and [rtc] blank (rtc = real time clock, not supported in v7.4.3.2).

1) menu - system - settime - enter all settings - tab - ok

»img229c.imageshack.us/img229/222···4up2.png

(to exit "menu" mode: hit "two dots" or tab-cancel)

2) To verify the new settings:

=> system settime

»img301.imageshack.us/img301/7948···3zp9.png

Here the "time zone name" is simply shown as:

(UTC-05:00)

Now, when you go to GUI it is shown as:

(UTC -05:00) Bogota, Lima, Quito

»img129.imageshack.us/img129/8990···4ui3.png

It obviously looks like a GUI programming bug.

Well, time zone naming is just buggy in both CLI and GUI. After shutoff/restart (both PC and modem) I also lost my custom date/time (no big deal but probably shouldn't happen).

Time Zone Name in the CLI for some reason changed to:

(UTC-01:00)

while the Time Zone itself is still (UTC-05:00):

»img228c.imageshack.us/img228/307···5yh3.png

In the GUI, time zone name didn't change, still stuck in Colombia just as it was before:

»img515.imageshack.us/img515/4688···9oe0.png

For now I'll just leave it at that, assuming this to be just a bug affecting the names and not core functions. Overall, I find this version superior to v6.1.9.6 I had before. I was able to increase RWIN from 29040 to 39204 and could probably go much higher than that, with zero packet loss in Tweak Test.

Thank you for this information. I'll try to
remember about your comment relative to RWIN.

When we are talking about RWIN, would you suggest to keep increasing the number until "transfer efficiency" drops below 100% (retransmitted packets start to show)? I could never get RWIN in 40,000 area before and I'm not sure how far beyond that (50000, 60000) it is reasonable to go.

That's a tougher one, i never needed to mind about this as i'm a "light" user, i guess...
