Last month i upgraded my system to an AMD quad core. This month We built a new system:
Moniter: 42 inch 1080p LCD TV. It was an open box clearance item at best buy. I got it for 674 bucks.
Then we got an aerocool M40 case. 70 Bucks at microcenter. REused the micro atx board and the 1 gig of ram, and the dual core AMD processor.
Reused a EVGA 7900 video card. Brought a 500 watt power suppply for under 30 bucks [microcenter rocks].
Brought an OEM 160 gig hd for 50 bucks. Brought a quit 80mm fan for 12 bucks.
I had alot of the cables laying round that we needed.
The resolution is nice: When on the PC I am at 1920x1080.
For the OS I am using ubuntu.
Also got a wireless nic for 13 bucks.
Tcub might have pictures to post of this build. -- Omne initium est difficile |

Heres a small shot of the TV on its gorgeous wood and glass stand, on MSNBC.com ... on a 42" screen....
I have to apologize for the blurriness but this is the Aerocool M40. 2 Optical slots, one currently with a DVD burner soon to be a BluRay drive, a 3.5 in slot and on the left is a HDD/Temperature/Fan RPM LCD Screen... very cool case that was pretty easy to work with.
heres a better shot of the TV itself, note the amazing resolution of the screen! Running Ubuntu Linux in 1080P.. just amazing! Again MSNBC's website in hi def, in 42 inches.
and last but not least a shot of the HDTV being switched to "PC" and showing Ubuntu Linux running in 1920x1080.
This was a very solid build. Honestly I was dumping money into this but thinking it was gonna feel half-assed. It definitely turned out WAY better then I thought and I'm very impressed with it! Its a complete for the living room and I'd say anyone was a 1080P HDTV should definitely build one of these!
I also had a very good time building it! -- one man's burden playing on my mind one man's burden got me just in time |

No floppy, DVD burner for 22.00, 2 GB RAM for 40.00. ITX case for 55.00 (too expensive for my frugal nature), old SATA 160 HD, KB/MOUSE/LCD via existng KVM switch. Speaker for 3.00.
For general usage, it is no bad, I wouldn't use it to compile my program tough. To run client/server app and access the DB from server, it is quite acceptable too. -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |
