Tutorial - 3D Button

This tutorial is to make a button like this:

To start off, change your foreground color to a medium gray. You won't need to worry about the background color selector for this tutorial. Select the Preset Shapes tool and use the following settings:

Make a circle of the desired size on a transparent background. With the circle still selected, select the Flood Fill tool and use the following settings:

Then click on the Flood Fill Options tab. Choose Black-White from the pull-down Gradient menu and then click on Edit. You'll need to click on Copy and create a new gradient that looks like the following:

Flood fill the circle with the gradient. Now you need to Defloat the selection. You can click Shft+Ctrl+F or go to Selections>Defloat. Create a new Raster layer. Then you'll need to change the Flood Fill style to Sunburst Gradient.

Under the Options tab we need to create another new gradient. I once again selected the Black-White and then chose Edit and created a gradient that looks like the following:

Make sure you have the new Raster layer that you created selected, the first layer invisible (click on the sunglasses) and then Flood Fill the selection. On the Layer Palette change the Layer Blend Mode from 'Normal' to 'Multiply'.

You should get something that looks like this:

Be sure to Defloat the selection (SHFT+CTRL+F) again. Using the color Dropper, choose white (255,255,255) from the color palette. Now we need to select the Flood Fill tool again. Open the Tool Options and change to the Linear Gradient. Then click on the Flood Fill Options tab. Under Gradient choose Fading Foreground. You'll need to Edit the gradient and save it with the following settings:

Create a new Raster layer, make sure the first two layers are invisible and then Flood Fill the selection. Copy and Paste the selection as a new image and you should get something that looks like this:

*** Note: The reason I copied and pasted the selection as a new image is for the next step. The method I used to resize this gradient will not resize just a selection. So you can't resize it within the original image, or the whole image will be resized. ***

Be sure and delete the flood fill from the original piece, as we won't need it in the final button. Resize your new image using the following settings:

Copy and Paste the image into your original piece as a new Raster Layer (CTRL-L). Position the layer where you want the top highlight to be. Now we need to Copy and Paste the image again into the original piece as another new Raster Layer. Flip the image and put it in about the same position as the highlight on the BOTTOM of the circle.

Click on Image>Blur>Blur More to give it a nice hazy effect. Then go to the Layer Palette and change the Layer Blend Mode to Overlay. Move this layer down one level, it needs to be under the top Highlight. Your piece should currently look like this:

This would be a good time to save this in .psp format and then you could use it as a template any time you want a 3D, round button.

Now the fun part! We get to add color. =o) Select the bottom layer that contains the graduated circle. Go to Colors>Adjust>Red/Green/Blue (SHFT+U). Play with the settings until you get a color that you like. If you turn on the Auto Preview feature, you can see what it will look like on the button.

Here are the settings that I used:

Now all you have to do is add a drop shadow, a background and we're good to go! You can also put things 'inside' the button by putting images between the button and the next layer up (Inner Glow). A good way to keep the layers organized is by labelling them in the Layer Palette and then you won't get them mixed up. Like this:

You can adjust the transparency settings on the highlight layers according to your own tastes. My final image turned out to be:

=o)

I use version 6. I tried v7, but I just didn't like it as much, so I never upgraded!

You must have v7, eh? I know some of the menus and the like were rearranged. Sorry about that. =o(

Yes I do, and after seeing your tutorial I like the layout of the tools a lot better than ver 7. I guess I'll keep my eyes open and maybe I'll find an old copy behind a shelf somewhere and buy it....

First, click on the Dropper tool:

and then left-click on the color you want from the Color Palette:

and that will change your foreground color. To change your background color, you do the same thing but you click with your right mouse button.

Just to add for those using PSP7, styles of which wastelands described for each tool selection are on the right side. Solid, gradient, and pattern.

That's great! =o)

You might try the Circle deformation on that and see how it comes out. I think that would make a square image 'fit in' a lot better. I didn't include it in my tutorial because I didn't think to try it until after I'd typed it up. ;o)

(Note: that comment was really for the AOL image that is gone now.)

What's wrong Red? Just to note, I had to work a tad bit differently since I'm working only with Paint Shop Pro 7.
