| Which Canadian city do you think is the most gay friendly?
I've lived in Montreal, which was pretty gay friendly. Vancouver seems pretty gay friendly too, but in a different way that Montreal was. Montreal was kind of an unspoken acceptance. In Vancouver, its kind of like everyone makes a huge effort to be accepting. In Montreal it just is, in Vancouver it is, but with what seems like lots of effort.
There seems to be lots of gay people in Alberta, but I never noticed it being very gay friendly when I was there.
So, in your opinion would it be Toronto, Montreal, Calgary or another city? |

Toronto has the biggest pride weekend in Canada for sure... so obviously it's up there but it's not like Montreal! |

| reply to EveryName Let's face it... Outside of small towns in the prairies and northern Ontario, all of Canada is pretty much gay friendly... Don't forget we're one of the few nations in the world who has legalized gay marriage...
I really don't see the point in trying to start a pissing contest about which major city is the most gay friendly. Pretty much any major Canadian city with a sizable gay community qualifies as much as any other...
Then again one has to wonder if Harper would try to raise this issue back from the dead if he were to win a majority in this election??? |

What about the east coast? Its it as accepting as the rest? |

| reply to EveryName Again, I haven't been to the east coast since the 80's, but I'd be willing to assume that Moncton and Fredericton and Halifax would have statistically significant gay communities as much as the next town.
Chances are you'll find gay bashers in every community as well, but my experience has been that even small towners aren't as openly anti-gay as they might have been 20 years ago.
Let's face it. The odd white supremacist or anti-whatever hate crime tends to make national headlines in this country. While even those are few and far between, I honestly can't remember any journalistic coverage whatsoever concerning a gay bashing incident in the past 15 years... |

| reply to EveryName I have a good friend from the east coast who is gay and from what he tells me the culture out there is somewhat more subdued. Old prejudices die hard I guess, though he hasn't been back home in years. Here is a snippet about halifax (being the metro of the east):
The historic harbourfront city has a vibrant LGBT community, diverse culture, natural beauty, and down-home hospitality in a safe environment. Visitors to Halifaxs gay community and those looking for gay summer travel options will love the newly revamped Rainbow Halifax website (»www.rainbowhalifax.com), an LGBT Halifax travel resource with useful information such as travel packages, accommodations and gay event listings. -- »www.norml.ca/ |

the only reason i say that is when i read "cute boys and cute girls" listed as your interests, it seems to have a different "meaning" if it is coming from a male versus a female. -- Best Marketplace Ever: »www.cbc.ca/marketplace/speed_bumps/

However, I think you might have a different meaning then I do. When I say gay friendly I mean no one cares that your gay and expects that you act like a normal human being sure. Do I mean giant gay pride pride weekends with drag queens and everything else, not so much. If you have equal rights that are never going away that should be enough. |

It's not a hot topic for debate here. While maybe not the gay friendliest cities, they're not outright hostile either.
I would rate Edmonton as a little bit friendlier than Calgary. Calgary does have an active gay community and annual Gay Pride parade. |

| reply to EveryName said by EveryName :What about the east coast? Its it as accepting as the rest? My great uncle was gay and owned a gay bar in St. John's, Nfld and never had any issues. I also worked at an independent bookstore in St. John's when I was ~18 and we had a pretty robust gay/lesbian section and a fairly large clientele for the section. From my experiences I would say that St. John's was more "gay friendly" then the suburbs of the GTA albeit I've never seen any particular anti-gay sentiment in the GTA 'burbs. -- you can lead a horse to the water but you cannot make him drink...you can put a man through school but you cannot make him think --ben harper

| reply to dirtyjeffer Male or not, how does it change the context?
From the self proclaimed men and women deserve equal treatment in all (including divorce) advocate, I'm quite taken aback.
I think that says more about how you read into it, than what the true context is.
It's like me saying I love hot bitches. So thats right, i love angered pms'ing women. And if you were to infer that, you'd partially be right It's all how you read it jeffer. |
