Telus invests $33M in Que. Internet data centre

What this Telus data centre being built? Any info?

==========
MONTREAL -- Telus Corp. (TSX:T) is spending more than $33 million on a new Internet data centre in the Montreal suburb of Laval.

Telus currently operates eight data centres across Canada - buildings housing powerful computer servers, with redundant power, cooling and security systems - connected to its Internet protocol network.

The country's second-largest telecommunications company said Wednesday the state-of-the-art facility will meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards.

Retrofitting of an existing structure has begun, with completion of the new centre set for 2010.

"This investment in Quebec will support our clients' growing need for more powerful IT infrastructure while having one of the lowest carbon footprints of all data centres in North America," stated Karen Radford, president of Telus Quebec.

Telus said the 44,500-square-foot facility, with room for expansion, will consume as much electricity as 5,000 homes.

Its heat exchange system will exploit the Quebec climate for free cooling during two-thirds of the year as the complex meets the LEED green-building standards.

(to correct the article) Laval is not a suburb of Montreal. It's part of the Greater Montreal Area, but it's a proper city. And long distance.

TELUS does enterprise / server stuff too. This has nothing to do with their last mile ISP business.

It's a server farm, basically.

TELUS only offers Internet service (DSL) to British Columbia and Alberta. The offer roaming access in Quebec, through cell phones and Air Cards, but that's it as far as I know. There was talk in the past of eventually bringing Internet and digital TV (which is IP based) out east. Don't think this in particular is it, probably something business related if anything.

Through the purchase of QuebecTel a few years ago TELUS does provide residential services to parts of Quebec; and commercial/enterprise services through the entire provience.

TELUS also provides DSL (some On-Net, some Off-Net) through most of Canada, but only to business/commercial/enterprise clients. Residential is limited to BC, Alberta, and parts of PQ...

Technically they have residential service in Toronto since they do have fiber to CityPlace in Toronto.

Telus can offer DSL everywhere in Quebec, much like Teksavvy. I recall that they only offer it as a perks to its business customers.

hmmmmmm

@videotron.ca

I see nothing on their website about any internet offer for Quebec. Nor have I ever seen anyone in Quebec that has Telus internet. Not that its impossible...

Maybe this 33-million dollar "Internet data centre" has something to do with the joint Bell-Telus deployment going on:

»Bell Canada, Telus To Deploy HSPA

I hope not. I would rather see Telus break into the Quebec Internet market on its own.

Only for business customers, they don't provide service for residential directly...

Alright, technically you're right... But it is a one-off development.
