| [iPhone] iPhone OS 2.2
Right after Apple pushed out iPhone Firmware update 2.1 it seems they sat down and started slaving on 2.2 right after.
An article from Ars Technica talks about some of the features revealed thus far by developers (those brave souls going against the NDA!) »arstechnica.com/journals/apple.a···2-2-beta
Nothing to terribly exciting as of now. But one thing I noticed that seemed a little strange to me with the introduction of "Emoji's" in SMS and e-Mail. Emojis are to the Japanese what emoticons are to us...Americanees... Apparently they're "all the rage" in Japan. Why not just call them emoticons? Unless Apple is trying to drive iPhone sales overseas. Whatever the reason for this, it seems like a pretty cool feature, though it would be more then cool if they added MMS!!!
Now that a portion of the cat has been let out of it Non-Disclosure Agreement bag, what other features do you hope to see emerge in the coming weeks [leading to the release of 2.2]?
For me, I'd like to see -MMS -Copy/Paste -Flash Support in Safari
in that order, after that, tie in a few bug fixes and I would call the iPhone damn near perfect (aside from the few "reception" issues I get now and again)! -- one man's burden playing on my mind one man's burden got me just in time |

| ... and after 2.2 it still won't be perfect and they be slaving on the next release. Your short list of features are a don't care for me, I've got my own list of software enhancements or apps. On the hardware front I think the CPU could use a bump in clock speed, along with a new chipset to reduce power consumption and increase battery life. |

| reply to TCub New iPhone user here. MMS is a must, and I'm very disappointed it's lacking in what is supposed to be the most advanced phone. I have been lurking some Apple forums and it seems that this is a heated debate, most Apple fan boys taking the side of Apple saying e-mail is much more advanced and MMS is yesterday's technology that is obsolete. Well, they apparently don't have any college aged friends because MMS is very popular.
I like the phone overall, but I don't see me keeping it two years. I'm keeping a close eye on Android and Windows Mobile 7 both of which are shaping up nice. Apple has to kick it into full gear to complete with this upcoming platforms and give consumers features we want. MMS is on the top of the list, Japanese emoticons not so much. -- We have two political parties in America. One is evil, and the other is stupid. Sometimes, they get together and do something both evil and stupid. That's called bipartisanship. |

I think Apple releasing yet another iPhone would be a bad call. I'm sure some people were pissed when they found their original iPhones were being replaced by the iPhone 3G, good for people who don't already own one, but can't of a kick in the pants to those who do. Software updates can and already have improved battery life and in terms of a smartphone, this iphone has much better battery life then most my previous phone.
A new chipset would make sense, since the 3G's Infineon chipset was blamed for the reception issues, though bumping up the CPU's clock speed seems like it wouldn't do much good seeing as the iPhone operates smoothly enough in its current state. Adding more power would only lessen the battery life.
As for your "own list" of features and improvements, care to share them? |

The whole e-mail is better thing would make alot more sense if everyone's cell phone were capable of recieving e-mails. Why send my friend an e-mail when she won't get it until she checks it? I know its possible to send an e-mail as an SMS or vice versa but it just seems silly to not include that into the phone itself... |

Equipment gets hardware updates on a regular basis, most people buy when they need equipment and then never look back otherwise everyone would be in a constant state of being pissed at all major vendors because something faster and cheaper is always coming along. Updating the iPhone will happen once a new chipset comes along that increases battery life.
And yes, I own several iPhones.
I read a statistic this week that more SMS/MMS are higher than # calls. I rarely use SMS/MMS, but understand that majority of people have basic phones and therefore SMS/MMS is heavily used. |

| reply to TCub Why would I be pissed off about Apple releasing the iPhone 3G? Seems to me that progress is a good thing, PLUS Apple negotiated with AT&T such that anyone who bought an original iPhone qualified for the upgrade pricing rather than having to pay full retail. |

| Hmm, the whole pricing thing was very confusing to me, but if thats the case and they didnt have to spend FULL retail price (something like over $500) then thats okay. I was only aware of the price I paid as a new AT&T customer and I had heard about other people not being eligible to upgrade and got stuck paying a lot more.
As for the other remarks. This discussion will not turn into a pointless tantrum. This is to discuss new features that may come up with the new firmware. Yes I do purchase computers and other electronic gadgets...Sony claims they're video game consoles have 10 year life cycles, Apples computers are supposed to last a long time as well. I used to be a PC gamer, I bought a new video card AT LEAST once a year, on top of lots and lots of other computer parts, I know what its like.
Anyway.
That Ars Technica article is pretty recent and the beta for 2.2 was just seeded a week or two ago. I've heard people say the new update is expected to be released by the end of this month! Maybe this one will include Push services? To me it seems like a lot of these features were in place but Apple pulled the plug last minute to try and resolve all the other "issues" people were having. So for them to cook up 2.2 and have it released in a month doesn't seem so far fetched. |

| Hopefully it'll be here soon. Its interesting to see Apple tweaking this, adding that to better suit the iPhone against its competitors... like the Blackberry Storm..
On a side note, totally unrelated to the topic, I think I (and other iphone users) are taking these updates for granted. The iphone is the first phone I've owned that even allows updates at all. My first Samsung phone didn't have it, my Razr didn't have it, even my Motorola Q didn't have it!
Back on subject though.... Apple is supposed to have an event on Tuesday in which they're going to reveal a new line of Mac Books, perhaps they'll make an announcement about the iPhone update to! All in all, I really the rumors about it coming out this month are true. |
