@verizon.net | reply to cangler umm my connection type is PPPoE...does that change anything? |

darcilicious Cyber Librarian Premium join:2001-01-02 Forest Grove, OR | You might want to search this forum for more help re: PPPoE. Or start a new thread. As the FAQ says, it doesn't address PPPoE. But I'm pretty sure it can still be done... |

When the FAQ was written, I prepared it from what I have here in front of me. In case there was something odd about Verizon's PPPoE, I didn't want to write a procedure in the FAQ without verifying it.
cangler: I believe it's fairly straightforward. If you are on coax PPPoE with the Actiontec, get it switched over to ethernet from the ONT then test your connection with the Actiontec ethernet PPPoE. I believe the Actiontec connection will self-detect the connection type, whether DHCP or PPPoE or ethernet or coax. Let me know if this is different than your experience.
If the Actiontec can connect PPPoE, then you simply power off, connect your new router, do whatever you need to make it connect PPPoE. I believe the accountname is verizonfios, and any password will succeed.
Once you have your primary router connected, use the FAQ to connect the Actiontec using either Part 3 (WAN to LAN), or Part 4 (LAN to LAN).
Let me know a step-by-step that you took (post in this thread), and I will use your post to modify the FAQ for future use. |

umm my connection type is PPPoE...does that change anything? Doesn't change anything. It's Open PPPoE, so it can actually log in with the defaults that are in the router. You can change those defaults to anything you want, and it will have no effect, it will log you in. |

@verizon.net | reply to cangler you should use your WRT54G For the internet, and then dasiy chain your Actiontec to the 54G, but dont forget to change your 54G IP to something else...IE 192.168.2.1 |

| Whoa !!! you can actually do this ??? does the ActionTec have to be setup as a bridge (as seeen in some other threads), let it get a DHCP from the Linksys, or must it have a static IP ? I did some isolation last night and the the speeds I got with the Linksys (WRT54GL) as the gateway were INCREDIBLE !!! and consistent - Of course, without the ActionTec in the picture (yes I'm ethernet to the ONT), you loose the programing information for the TV service - my kids were barking about that
Any help is appreciated .... John |

will a netgear WGR614 v4 work too? Specs show it's equipped with 10/100 WAN and LAN ports, plus 804.11g. So it ought to provide adequate response.
»www.smallnetbuilder.com/componen···mid,189/ will show performance characteristics for some models. Use the dropdown box to select a different spec. WGR614 is not on that list. Total throughput WAN to LAN and # of connections are also important performance specs depending on what applications you're using.
Like darcilicious says, try it. It will hook up and pull an address. |
