 FYI: Embarq Extended Reach DSL

Embarq is currently offering Extended Reach DSL in selected areas. Extended Reach DSL implements a new technology that allows us to offer DSL to customers that were previously out of range. Extended Reach DSL is being offered to customers that have a 19k-24k foot loop. Customers within this distance have been sent a letter regarding this offer. If no letter was received, chances are the customer has a loop length greater than 24k feet.

Extended Reach DSL is not offered through our regular customer service line. Customers that received a letter have a dedicated number they can call to request Extended Reach DSL.

If you have any questions regarding Extended Reach DSL, please send me an IM and I will answer accordingly.

I got a letter saying you did "UPGRADES" and went to my account and found out we can get 10 meg DSL (which i may do if cox raises their price)

is that what this is?

i'm glad your doing upgrades in the FWB area as Cox's 20/2 plan is $60.00 a month now.

also, how does the FWB routing go? does it still go from Orlando/Atlanta/Net or did you guys fix that?

Extended reach is 768k only. If you can get 10M, you're out of a CO or RT, with regularl ADSL/2+ service.

Then you are probably not extended reach (judging by the price you likely are not). It is more likely a remote was put in nearby, which would also explain why you can get 10M when you previously could get nothing. As far as I am aware, the extended reach program letters actually say "extended reach dsl" is being offered to the area.

Embarq Extension is bull

We live in a a fairly upper scale area in South Fort Myers and have been getting 512k for the last eight years, 256 for a while. At the end of the circuit which passes our subdivision is a country club where 6M is available and they are about a mile further from the C/O than we are.

Embarq offers what they can't deliver and it is impossible to get any explanation from them, The MOST anyone gets is 512.

Here is their offering from their website.

High-Speed Internet Service
Up to 768k download / 384k upload

* Basic high-speed Internet access
* Check email and browse the Web casually
$29.95

$19.95 + $29.95 voice plan
$49.90 total bundle price

Up to 1.5M download / 512k upload

* Best choice for seeking the right balance of price and speed
* Check e-mails, send pictures, shop online and trade stocks

$34.95
$24.95 + $29.95 voice plan
$54.90 total bundle price

Most customers have no idea what speed they are actually getting and/or if they are getting anything close to what for what they are paying for.

I am not a Comcast fan but Embarq sucks compared to what Comcast offers and delivers. I have helped many people switch to Comcast and they are much happier. Most have Comcast TV anyway so they get 6M for $43.

We actually have an Embarq executive living in the subdivision and he can't even get an answer as to the poor quality provided by Embarq.

I am in the process of dropping my $39 a month copper land line with Embarq and and going VOIP for $24.

Embarq sucks!

Re: FYI: Embarq Extended Reach DSL

My parents got the extended reach DSL information in the mail but didn't open it up until yesterday November 13th. We missed the deadline on the 8th, but I was wanting to know when it will be offered again?

Please E-mail me at SirJas90 [AT] aol.com

Thank you

I called to place my order for extended reach as soon as I opened the letter, but they said they could not make my order due until Jan 12th. Why such a wait? If it isn't available until after the first of the year, why send out the letters now?

I live in an area where Embarq offers DSL to all the communities that surround me, yet offer NOTHING to people in my direct area.

I have made many phone calls to Embarq to ask them about DSL only to be given a different answer every time. This has been going on for a year and a half now, and when I call and ask about DSL becoming available I've received answers from "one month" to "never".

If you ask me, Embarq is digging themselves in a hole. The ONLY reason I've kept my land line is with the hopes that they will offere DSL. At this point I cannot get an answer as to if they will EVER offer DSL in my area.

So I'm going to kill my land line and go with my cell phone only. Seeing as how the phone company is becoming obsolete with regards to telephone service (when I can get unlimited calling plans with no long distance and roaming, internet, data, texting etc... via cell phone) I cannot believe that they are not working faster to provide high speed internet to more people.

My only option is to get dail up, or go with satillite internet. Neither of which I'm happy about.

As far as I'm concerned Embarq sucks and I hope it dies a slow painfull death, I'm tired of waiting and not even being able to get a straight answer.

You are not in range of DSL...how much more of a straight answer do you need? It is humorous that you folks speak quite harshly about Embarq, but the fact of the matter is, you would be falling all over yourself to sign up if they were to bring DSL out to your remote areas.

As a matter of fact, I am in range of DSL, Embarq simply has not upgraded the equipment needed. Am I in a rural area - yes, but I'm a lot closer to the CO than many of the surrounding communities that have DSL. And you are correct, I would be falling over myself to sign up. Everyone around me screaming for DSL, yet they do nothing to bring it to us. I have a friend who works for them and she tried to get an answer as to when they were going to get it and the answer was "we're doing everything we can". Its simply a case of Embarq dragging their feet. They are starting to lose customers who are going cellular only, since there is no real benefit to keep a land line. Our options are dial up, satellite or Cellular broadband. Once thats done - why keep a land line at all? I think its just poor business, and very poor customer service.

It isn't a matter of poor customer service...it is a matter of business. Embarq is a business, after all. It can cost tens of thousands of dollars to begin serving an area with DSL. If the cost/benefit of bringing DSL isn't high enough (whether that be because of a lack of subscribers, cost of upgrading infrastructure, etc.), Embarq has every right as a business to forgo DSL in that area. You aren't guaranteed DSL just because you have a phone line...customer service has nothing to do with it.

bedpanbrian

@gorge.net

Hazy Arc,

I've never said I was guaranteed DSL. Go back to my original post. My frustration is not only from not having DSL, its also from not being able to get a straight answer from Embarq about it.

I've had several phone calls with Embarq. I simply want to know "When, if ever, do they plan on bringing DSL to my area". If they don't ever plan on doing - fine, just say so. If the CS reps don't have that info - fine, say "I don't have access to that info". The problem is every time I call I get a different answer. I moved a year and half ago (about three miles) from where I did have Embarq DSL, and was perfectly happy with it. When I first moved I was told by Embarq it would be available in one month, and in fact continued to pay for the service for a few months thinking it would become available. Several months later I was told it would be a year, the next time I called I had to argue with the person that it was in fact NOT available where I live (since half the town has it and has had it for years). Then I was told they were currently working on it and it would be "any time now". Then I was told they don't have info on it. Its frustrating to call in to Embarq, talk to someone who is in Kansas City, who has no idea about the area I live in and get a different answer each time. Each time the person acts concerned, apologizes for my concern and lets me know that if and when its available to me, I'll receive a letter. There is a giant regional Embarq office fifteen minutes from where I live - yet its impossible to speak to anyone who knows.

This is what I'm tired of - not knowing. If they plan on 2009, fine, say so. 2010, fine, say so. Never - fine, just tell me. I'm frustrated with not knowing if it will ever be available to me.

So please, don't make it seem like I'm crying and whining because I feel I'm owed something by Embarq - I know they owe me nothing. I understand about the cost versus benefit of upgrading equipment. I understand they have the right to forgo DSL in any area they want. I simply have said its poor customer service to not let us (current customers) know if they will ever be offering expanded services that we are desperate for. In the day and age when the old land lines are in fact becoming obsolete, DSL is one thing that can keep them from losing customers. So to have their agents give out differing information to everyone that calls (think I'm the only one around here who has called? Think I'm the only one who's frustrated? Very wrong.) every time, is poor customer service. THIS is the source of my frustration. I'm willing to accept whatever the answer is - assuming they would give a straight answer and stick to it. But it seems as if nobody has any idea, but nobody is willing to admit that and say so. Instead we get the run around.

hazy arc, if you couldnt get real broadband you'd be crying too. DSL and cable were not available at my house for a long time, and my area isnt even rural! It pissed me off to hell, and i blamed the company. trust me, you would act the same way. have a little sympathy.

DSL anywhere

@embarqhsd.net

reply to bedpanbrian
The CSR's do not necessarily have that information therefore they come up with an answer that THEY think will pacify you.

All Embarq employees are being told that they're rolling out DSL to cover XX percentage of an area. Sales people get all hyped up and have even gone so far as to call customers.

I know of a few instances where they scheduled and put a DSL shelf into a switch but the fiber transport (another department) was delayed by months. The local techs were told they were going to turn up the DSLAM on such and such date, but it came and went and no one could answer the question until one day somebody says "did they fix the bandwidth problem on that fiber?"

Yes, its a "Hello right hand this is the left hand" issue and with the corporate office doing forced reduction in all the different areas sometimes the "goto person" is no longer there (I've sent 8 emails and left 8 voice messages to a state engineer that I need info from, to find out just a couple of days ago that he'd been laid off three weeks ago).

Anyway, it boils down to the CSR looks at the screen and if your MEDR says 00000 then you can't get DSL, even if you lived directly across the street from a DSLAM and a tech banged on your door and told you he just hooked up the first DSL and for you to call. Why, because they're not local, have no idea of the area you're in and rely 100% on that computer screen to give them info. Anything else that CSR is baffling you with BS

what the hell

I thought this thread was about the new extended reach DSL that adds about 8K more feet to the max distance from the DSLAM.

Instead it looks like a hijacked thread on bitching that you can't get DSL.

Let's please get this thread back on track and create a new thread about how the CSRs cannot tell you anthing

thanks

Yes, I admitt it did somewhat get hijacked. I do apologize for that and take accountability for it. It is just frustrating to not be able to get answers when more and more they are getting people broadband and I live in one little pocket that seems to be left for dead. So, I do apologize for hijacking the thread.

I am extremely frustrated with Embarq! On 10/30/08 I schedule an Extended Reach install date of 11/28/08. I confirmed this on 11/26/08. When no one arrived on the 28th I called in and eventually got back to the original
specialist involved in the scheduling. She guaranteed she would call me back on 12/01/08 to explain why the service is no longer available. It took until today for me to talk directly with her - she happened to answer her phone after I had left several voice mails that she did not return. The bottom line is that the technician decided there were no more lines in our area and he emailed someone who was supposed to notify me that they were not coming out. So if you are scheduled to receive Extended Outreach do not count on it until they actually show up and do the install and most certainly do not anticipate that it is going to occur and buy a router or new computer or the like!
