hmm, neither have I but if you provide enough information maybe we could work through this.  iMac's and all the software on them are easy enough to play around with and figure out.
So what exactly is your external hardware? And can you/will you be hooking it up to your iMac and is it compatible? |

The external hardware is just a cassette player and cables to plug into the input jack of the computer.
All i have for software, is what came with my Imac. As mentioned, I never used Garageband. Will Itunes do it also?

| I've never used this, but since I often post about things of which I have absolutely no knowledge of, this is another attempt to secure my reputation.
GarageBand should be able to take care of this, but it may be a little more complex than you're needing (that's the impression I get).
Maybe you could try Audacity. It allows for recording through line input devices among other options. I've never used it, so I'm not sure if it is easier to use than Garageband, but I'll just throw it out there as another option for you to consider.
