This isn't anything new...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't someone jailbreak their iPhone and use an app like PdaNet for tethering?

Certainly there can't be any clause in the contract about not jailbreaking a phone. And if I recall correctly, AT&T is advertising their $30/mo iPhone data plan as "unlimited".

Just an idea, not as though I'd really consider trying it right now.

That's the thing: you'd have to jailbreak your phone, which is something that most users (including myself) don't wish to do. On top of that, the current solution for tethering on a jailbroken iPhone is anything but elegant. It requires a ton of configuration, and only works for applications that support SOCKS proxies.

the new pdanet software (for jailbroken iphone) requires none of that nonsense. all tcpip apps work and no proxy config. fyi

Cool, I was not aware of that. Thanks!

no problem. my only complaint is you still have to manually set up and activate your ad-hoc wireless. I can't see why that's not built in, but its still pretty easy.
