I've heard that ATT is planning on putting bandwidth caps on us. What will the number be? I am quite worried about this. |

That is probably not capping. I would suspect either there is some trouble on the line, or a bridge tap has somehow gotten on the line. You may want to take a look at your modem stats. |

That's not capping at all. Capping is an invisible limit like you going over your cellphone limits, you can still go over, but you get charged, nothing changes with your service.
Now where is the "they are capping my torrents and NZB newgroups post"? |

Well, it WAS on newsgroups that I noticed it..for years 6.0-6.2.....then suddenly recently steady 5.4-5.5.....But its all good, thats not big enough difference to sweat over..:) thx both for replying. -- Click everyday to feed a Rescue Animal |

| reply to signmeuptoo This whole thread is mixing Bandwidth Caps, with Speed Caps and attainable speeds.
As of now, there are no Bandwidth Caps in the old BellSouth region, and attainable speeds by each level of service purchased- well, that's a whole different issue. -- No good deed goes unpunished. |

Do you want your electricity, gas, phone, car and house free?
I don't know if we'll ever get bandwidth caps, for your assumptions of what America should give you free is way, way off base. -- No good deed goes unpunished. |

| Free is one thing. Paying for a service and then the company deciding that they don't want to provide the service that you contracted for is quite another. When I signed up for Bellsouth DSL, it clearly stated that it was unlimited usage. Now, if they want to change it, that is breach of contract and I have no obligation to stay with the service. Of course, my contract length was something like two years and it has been fulfilled, but still, as long as I don't change my service plan, the contract should still be in effect. Those of us that have been with Bellsouth/ATT should be grandfathered in with the same service that we signed up for. If ATT can't live up to a contract, then I'm more than willing to take my money elsewhere. -- DSL Extreme 6.0

When I signed up for Bellsouth DSL, it clearly stated that it was unlimited usage. That is completely and utterly wrong. There has never been any statement in any contract that clearly stated unlimited usage. To the contrary, the original BellSouth Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy actually stated that BellSouth could limit or terminate your service if you use excessive bandwidth. The AT&T AUP is almost an exact duplicate of the older BellSouth AUP. »my.att.net/csbellsouth/s/s.dll?s···&leg=aup |

| If I may inject some useful dialogue... Just as I have stated in another forum, the manipulating effect of "throttling down", capping, "policing", "shaping" are all done on the WAN/ATM virtual side of the circuit... With the illusion of blazing fast "sync rates"... Basically, Bell can give you a 6Mg DSLAM profile, but only allow 128k through layer 2 via the switch or layer 3 via the router....
Without properly researching, I am confident to believe that in everybody's contract is a loophole for Bell to cut service without penalty or future retribution, Per their assumptions or beliefs.. What I know is NOT in the populations contract is manipulative marketing or blatantly lying to us with this "glorified" champion to the customers "Max Sync".... Which is nothing but creative way to present the appearance of this massive bandwidth, when in reality it is only from customer to DSLAM.. |

| reply to signmeuptoo The unfortunate situation here is (as often happens) that some people who abuse and misuse their connections end up ruining it for the rest.
Obviously, I'd love unlimited bandwidth forever at the lowest price, but things change due to business reality. Prices will go up and service will decline or change from time to time.
Most people can live easily within reasonable limits, and those people who live to download porn, pirated music and software, or run a business off a residential connection should pay for that level of service. |
