Poor performance on certain games

Click for full size
For some reason recently I have been seeing degrading performance in some of my games. I get really sporadic framerate issues, choppy gameplay and such. I always get about 30-50ms in pings, so that's not an issue.

System specs.

Amd X2 4200+ socket 939
2GB OCZ DDR 400
Nvidia 8800GS with latest drivers
250GB Sata II HD
Soundblaster Audigy
550 Watt Coolermaster PSU w/active PFC.

I did a virus scan (avast) and a malware scan (A-Squared free) and nothing came up.

I also ran a defrag (auslogics) and a registry defrag (auslogics).

I went from like 80+ FPS in COD2 1280x1024 to like 35fps......really crazy.

CPU is overclocked, but the video card is not.

Any ideas?

Might be an overheating issue? Check out your system temps, make sure everything looks normal. In the meantime, you might consider dropping the OC on the CPU and seeing if the problems subside.

did you make any changes to your system setup as far as drivers and settings when this started to happen?

what drivers are you using

no, I'm using the latest Nvidia drivers from their website.....I'll try dropping the cpu back to stock speeds and see if that works out.

put everything back to stock and i'm still getting crazy framerate issues. COD2 drops down to like 12fps on my 8800gs.....it would never drop below 45 before.

Probably the anti-virus/anti-spyware you have are causing it? Trying doing a clean format and test the games before you install anything and see if your performance improves.

BTW, why does your Windows XP SP3 looks totally like Vista? How did you do it?

Probably the latest drivers. If you're using the ones intended specifically for Far Cry 2, that'll do it.

I installed those, didn't get an appreciable boost in FPS, then tried playing TF2 and got really crappy framerate (and this is on a SLI 8800GT setup). Reverted to the previous betas and the problems went away.

Really, "latest drivers" hardly ever equates to "greater performance," at least when it comes to nVidia. More often than not, it just means "more problems."

I'm running SLI 8800GT's and the latest beta drivers work great in every game.
