Had this post on another topic, pulled it so the topic wouldn't die :\

What do you think? It's easy to get Windows home edition on even 96 megs ram, but Windows Xp pro... Not very easy for anything low on ram. |

.... So, does anyone have anything productive to add to this? |

| Yeah, extremelly slow. I actually made it to keep records of bills.
I was gonna put win 98 on it, but then figured why not try my luck?
I had to put parts from other pcs in it to make it to work... Esp. a newer cd drive...
It was hell to do it honestly. |

| Win2K Pro will run on about 64 MB memory after all updates before adding resident software, and it still has 2 years of security support. Or you could dig up some more memory. -- Interested in open source engine management for your Subaru? |

| reply to Metatron2008 Yeah, done that (just for the amusement value), though it was a 266MHz Pentium II. Apart from that, the specs were pretty much the same as yours. Once it had booted, it was surprisingly usable, at least for basic web browsing. Not fast by any standards, but it didn't suck as much as I expected, even with no 'tuning'. |

1 edit | One question to everyone:
Do you KNOW what the 6X-86 PR233 IS?
If you did, you'd know how amazing what I did is...

Yes, it's a Cyrix chip. It's ACTUAL mhz speed is 187 mhz. Although it has all things a pentium 2 has, it's performance was comparable to a pentium pro.
To put it bluntly, the only way what I did can be topped is for someone to succed in putting Xp professional on a pentium 1. |

| reply to Metatron2008 Damn straight it was hell to do. It's on a Cyrix processor!
It would make much better sense to put 98 or 2K on it. The Cyrix processor sucks something fierce on a lot of applications. I've always been an advocate of Cyrix Instead, but it's been a long time since that's been relevant. |

2 edits | Hey, I once attempted to put Vista on a Celeron 500 machine with a pci geforce 4 and 256 megs ram, so I already have a death wish
I installed Vista starter edition, and did the trick that enabled machines with less then 512 megs ram, so don't call me stupid please
I wish I had succeded on that one. Now THAT would've been a sight.
But alas, the thing crashed in Vista |
