Dreamweaver - Multiple Authors Problem

We have a few guys who update our web site. We are a Dreamweaver shop (CS3; MX2004) and recently there has been a problem with new content replacing existing content during updates. When the pages are updated earlier edits no longer appear.

I spoke with Adobe, and they suggested we make sure the remote site info is correct, and URL's and file names are not changed during udpates.

The CS3 authors report that when they connect to the remote site their local files are automatically updated. With MX2004, I get a copy of the remote file before applying changes.

I suspect this is a training issue more than a technical issue. Any suggestions are welcome!

Have you checked that none of your designers have disabled file synchronization for the site in question?

Perhaps you should clear everyone's site cache and then run some tests to see if it's still happening?

Definitely part of the problem. MX 2004 reports that "Dreamweaver cannot determine the remote server time. The Select Newer and Synchronize commands will not be available."

It seems as if you aren't using any version concurrency software. I don't know what kind of functionality Dreamweaver may or may not provide in this regard, but in other areas of content or source code management, there is always something in place to manage file versioning. Especially if multiple developers are working on a project.

DW allows you to check-out and check-in files, but since we are a small shop it has not been a problem before.

Are you using that system and you're still losing content?

No, we do not use this feature at this time.

Sounds like this is a good time to start using it

It now looks like the problem may be an author from another department. We are going to put the web site under a microscope and see if we can identify the issue.

May I suggest changing the FTP/SFTP password and only giving it to people whom you know have their Dreamweaver installations configured correctly?

Thanks, a methodical approach is warranted.
