[northeast] Just ordered my FIOS!

I came home from work, and there was a FIOS "tent" set up in my lobby (I live in Manhattan). I walked over to check out what the deal was, and lo and behold they had just completed a building wide FIOS install (there are 300 apartments in my building). Naturally I chatted up the sales guy, and (prepare yourself) I ordered the service! I got 20/5 internet, and every possible channel available on FIOS TV. They gave me a multiroom DVR, as well as a second box for another room. The deal seemed really good, with a total charge (for everything, including all movie and premium channels, as well as the DVR's) of $79.99 per month. I even got $20 off per month for the first 3 months (making it $59.99 per month), so I was happy.

Enough of my rambling, here is my question. What equipment will they provide me with? The sales guy told me it comes with a wireless router, however I dont want it. Does their interface equipment provide a simple RJ45 that I can just connect into my existing network? I dont want to have a VZ controlled piece of equipment managing my network, as I have multiple devices connected and I like to set permissions. Any advice, what should I do to prepare for the install?

I'd suggest sifting through the forum FAQ about the Verizon provided router & alternate configs. Lots of helpful info.

There isnt much information about the configuration I will be getting. Keep in mind that NYC FIOS installs are a brand new animal, as its not fiber direct to each tenant. Apparently they use bendable fiber to a common area, and then come into your apartment via coax (although I cant confirm this yet). I was hoping someone had insight into if I will be getting different equipment, and what that might be. Sometimes FAQ's dont always have what you need, hence my post here.

It is either fiber to your unit with your own ONT or you are VDSL. I suggest you doing a search for whatever installation application is being used for your building. Good luck!

Most that I have seen are fiber to each apartment. They put an ONT is an out of the way place, possibly a closet, and put the power unit near an outlet.
You can get ethernet or MOCA depending on the tech and your insistence.
The Verizon router is necessary to run the coax through for the channel guides.

Just an FYI there bundled prices don't include the prices for the STB's for that you gotta add $59.99+$19.99+5.99=85.97(not including taxes)

With FiOS you cannot and do not use VDSL or any other *DSL technologies.

Some MDUs do use VDSL over the standard copper pair. The MDU ONT goes in a common area and the existing coax and phone wires carry it all.

You might want to do some more reading before making statements like these.

Try searching on VDSL in this forum, for example, before posting

the 625 ont is vdsl
the 621 ont is ethernet - just like the 611 but not in the unit

They had a new customer promotion that includes the STB's for free.

I am trying to figure out which method they used in my building. The sales guy didnt seem to know much about that, so I am not really sure how to find out. I suppose I could go poking around in the (common) hallway, although the equipment might be placed in a locked closet.

Management or custodians should know if it's all installed in a Utility room, or if they ran conduit to the unit in the halls. If you didn't notice anything, and there's no new wall plate in the apartment, or corner molding running around the ceilings in the halls, then you'll probably get VDSL from common ONTs. They serve 8 units each, IIRC. How many units per floor do you have?

If other tenants have FiOS, and you are on good terms with them , check out their install(s). In addition to the router, there will be a VDSL modem.

If they have their own fiber connection, there will be an ONT/BBU in their unit.

My building is very large, I would say there is probably 15 or so apartments per floor. There is definitely nothing new installed in my apartment, and if they did any work in the hallways during the day I was not here to see it. I will ask the maintenance man next time I see him if he knows how they did it.

FIOS was literally not available until this past Thursday, and in fact even on the Verizon website my building still only shows DSL (in the address qualifier tool). For this reason nobody has been installed yet, although the sales guy told me over 40 apartments signed up with him.

Heh! Who knows, you may be patient "0"! Could be a dubious distiction...

Ha that would be nice, but I opted for a December 20th install instead. The only reason I did that was because TWC (my current provider) bills one month ahead of time and I am payed up through the end of December. I suppose I could have installed the FIOS sooner, however I would be double paying for a month. You have no idea how tough the wait will be!!

VDSL installations are usually not done in rental buildings, but in condo/co-op buildings. This way the cost to power up the common equipment is passed on to the co-op/condo association and not the landlord.

This does not mean that all condo/co-ops will not have there own ONT. I am not familiar with High-Rise condo/co-ops and Fios. In rentals, micro-ducts are placed in each unit often requiring access to units directly below and above your unit. This is done ahead of time and the fiber is pulled after you order.

There is some discussion in this thread »FCC Consumer Laws granting equal access to FIOS? about the need to have a maintenance man present while contractors run the micro-duct. I believe it was mentioned that in some cases track molding is used in the hallways and the final penetration to the unit is done after the service is ordered.

Thats interesting. As I (unfortunately) wont have mine for a month, I hope the building staff will be able to provide me with some information prior to that. If there is a common area installation on my floor I will try to take some photos and post them.
