Replacing a notebook power adapter

My son is in another city, so I may not have all the information I need at hand. He needs a new power adapter for a Gateway T6836 notebook. When looking at a non-OEM replacement which might not list specific model numbers, are the critical specs to consider the output - 19 volts for his Gateway adapter - and the right kind of adapter tip? Anything else that has to match?

Take a look at the old power adaptor, it should tell you the spec in terms of voltage and amerage. As for the tip, all universal power adaptor comes with a set of tips that there is one will fit.

Thank you.

Just so I'm sure, the adapter for my laptop has a line that reads:

Output: 19V --- 3.42A(3.42A)

A replacement should have these exact numbers? Also, why is the 3.42A repeated?

Additionally, I take it that 19 volts x 3.42 = 65 watts output?

Power = voltage * amerage.

As long as you get something that output 19V and more than 65 watts, it will the requirement.

Here is one: »www.mwave.com/mwave/Viewproduct.···T&Page=1

Fifth from the list.
