Re: Move DSL to different phone number in same house

When you have your new account all set up, create an email user name. Once this is done, give a call into tech support and ask them to do a repoint for you. They can then move your old username over to your new account for you.

Thanks for all the info.
I decided to keep line 1 and move everything over. DSL won’t get moved until next week.
I'm hoping DSL doesn't get messed up.
I’ll post back with the results when it’s over.

Two rooms have line 1 and line 2, but only one cable, with red & green wires for line 1 and black & yellow wires for line 2.
Correct - your have what is called Quad-four cable. It consists of four conductors, but they are not twisted into pairs.

Green/Red is Line 1
Black/Yellow Line 2

New construction uses twisted pair cable like that used for Ethernet to improve transmission when multiple phone lines or DSL is used.

All you need to do is disconnect all four wires and swap them. That way jacks that used to be on line 1 are now on line 2 and vice versa.

If you are feeling adventurous you might want to think about installing a while house POTS/DSL splitter near the NID. Splitter does a better job of isolating DSL from voice and eliminates need to have a filter on each non-DSL device. This is especially important if you have a lot of voice devices or your DSL circuit is long.

In that case all you need to do is disconnect inside wiring from "old" line and reconnect it to "new" line.

If you have a modern NID, network Interface device, all phone lines terminate there making change easy.

Yes. there's a NID. Not sure I'd be able to figure out how to change the wiring in it.

All rooms have Line 1. Back rooms have line 1 only.
Currently DSL is on Line 2.
I'm sure this isn't the correct technical description, but -
Two rooms have line 1 and line 2, but only one cable, with red & green wires for line 1 and black & yellow wires for line 2.

I thought it would be easier to move the DSL to line 1, rather than try to rewire anything. But that's also taking a chance that it won't get screwed up or have connection problems once DSL is on Line 1.

Maybe keep the line with DSL and transfer the phone number from the other line?

The line I want to keep is the only one wired to all the rooms in the house, which is one reason I want to keep it.

Tom,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, new email addresses would be an issue, plus early cancellation charges. I only want one phone number, so Selective Ring isn’t an option either.
The line I want to keep is the only one wired to all the rooms in the house, which is one reason I want to keep it.
I guess I just have to decide if it’s worth taking a chance moving the DSL.
