"Real world" speeds around 10% of what transceiver stats say

Hey guys,

I recently got Verizon DSL (1.5mbps advertised) and noticed that my "Real world" DL speeds are around 10% of what my transceiver stats say.

Here's my stats from 192.168.1.1/transtat.htm

quote:
DSL speed kbps / down = 1792 / up = 448
Margin (dB) / down = 15.5 / up = 23.0
Line Attenuation (dB) / down = 54.0 / up = 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) / down = 16.4 / up = 10.8

I've tried downloading files from several different sites and my downloads speeds always max out around 180kbps. That's obviously a pretty big discrepancy.

Any ideas why I'm only getting around 10% ?

Thanks!

You sure you're not confusing bits with bytes? Your maximum download should be somewhere around 180 kB/s (note that "b" is bits, "B" is bytes).

When running a speed test, they will 99% of the time show up as KiloBITS per second. When you download a file such as using a web browser or download manager, 99.9% of the time the speed will be shown in KiloBYTES per second. At the 1.5Mbps speed, your KiloBYTES per second (KB/s) should come around 180 KB/s at best. A speed test site such as www.speedtest.net or this site's speed test tool should show close to or at/above 1500 Kilobits (kbps) in the speed, just like the Verizon website, however they show the speeds in Megabits rather than Megabytes.

If you want, you can visit www.speedtest.net and post up a speed test for us to see. As the person above stated, you're probably confusing bits to bytes. To see if you're getting full speed, download a file for a few minutes, and then multiply the speed (such as 178KB/s) by 8 and that will give you your line speed. My math shows 1424kbps for download speed which is right in the range you should be at.

Hope this helps.

OK, I feel like a real idiot now

You're right, I was confusing KB with Kb. I never even paid attention to that little detail, lol.

I guess what I meant to say then is that the speed my browser shows when DL'ing a file is @ 180KB per second (not Kb). Sorry for the confusion.

So I guess that's a pretty good then!

180KB/s is right where you should be. Glad we could help! Also, don't worry about it. Loads of people get confused between the two .

Also to get this out of the way, you should be uploading around 48KB/s
