WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

Wave did you guys start throttling torrents?

Why is my 10meg connection that I used for over a year, suddenly droped to a 50kb connection any time I open a torrent or try to download anything bit torrent related.

Why am I getting major speed spikes?

No matter how much torrents i open i am only able to get to about 50kb sec, and when I do a speedtest.net with even one torrent open, I only get 2 megs on my 10 meg connection...

As soon as I turn it off every thing is good..

Called wave tech support, got the canned answer.. " We dont limit our download speed?"

CAN some one from WAVE tell me something?

Whats going on...

Everything was so good for a year what happend?

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

There's always a possibility of a routing problem, but it would be hard to tell.

I'm a WoW player and have been downloading a lot of fairly large patches recently and have not noticed a capped speed. I should mention the patching is through BT.

kamidake55

@wavecable.com

I haven't noticed any differences in torrents but I can tell you that leeching off of news was throttled to 44.5 (which is very close to your 50k). which leads me to believe that it's the same throttling.

I changed clients and changed providers, giganews to thundernews and it didn't change. It was that point where I got suspicious. And no it wasn't my connection or firewall. As soon as I changed the port (from the standard NEWS port) to port 80, it shot up to 9500Kbit sec in an instant. So they are throttling...

My guess is that they throttle news and torrents after you transfer a certain amount.

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

I'm doubting that very seriously.

I'm a usenet guy and download plenty.

kamidake55

@wavecable.com

Right now I am being throttled to 1000Kbit. It was full speed at 10Mbit and shut down to 1000Kbit in an instant. Multiple speed tests have shown this to be EXACTLY 1000 give or take 3kbit. eg. 1003Kbit, 998 kbit (tested to multiple sources and multiple times)

kamidake55

@wavecable.com

Just read in their agreement now, under section 7

»www.wavebroadband.com/img/subagree.pdf

They are limiting now. And with multiple reports this is confirmed.. I'm switching to Surewest tomorrow

kamidake55

@wavecable.com
An update here: offical word is YES there is throttling on certain kinds of traffic after you hit 3GB. And you will be kicked down to 256K-1.5K range for 24 hrs, which then it will reset.

Like drew, I haven't noticed any throttling using paid-for Usenet over the years. I'm an extreme user too and don't want to say how much I download. Well okay, okay...about 175gigs/months is average and some months north of 250gigs. I've had single days where I've grabbed 40gigs. Hard drive space is the limiting factor, even using 1TB Seagates. Never had too much of an issue and if I ever I did, I would cancel service.

I don't torrent a whole bunch anymore, but pay little attention when I do and usually leave uploads running for days upon days (self throttled to say 30KB/s) to give back to others and maintain a healthy ratio. I'll try and pay attention next time I grab a big file from some speedy Swedish seeders.

Where's the freaking speed increases Wave??? Hasn't it been like 2 FRIGGIN' YEARS since we had a bump? Turn up the dial and give us some love. 20/5 plan...make it so.

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

Their infastructure hasn't been upgraded since the @Home days around here.

Don't ask for 20/5 when they can barely eek out 10/1.5

luluddd

I am having the exact same problem with Easynews. I was getting 500-700 KB/Sec in Firefox consistently..now its down to 40-75KB...but only on Easynews....

I tried to download a large file from Microsoft and a file from Easynews...the Microsoft file came in at 500 KB and the easynews file at 25KB....

So do you guys think its a hard cap on the amount, on the specific site or a time limit.

Wave is coming out on Monday to test the line...but I think I am just out of luck...they will never admit to it....

Wave is my only internet option...arghhhhh......

kamidake55

@wavecable.com

I have a bit of an update. My friend and I who is also on Wave and determined that as of right now, there is a flat 3GB transfer limit per day. (since last Friday)

Once you hit that limit they jail you and roll what you paid for (Say 10Mbit) back to 1.5Mbps. It will stay that way until 11:25 PST, which is when it will reset.

Based upon what others have said here, this seems to be only occurring in the Auburn/Rocklin market and I think the primary reason the lack of bandwidth.. they say nothing is wrong with their side or they are not limiting but... yes they are.

They are also doing some hostname throttling to news servers. If it slows down, try a different new server (usually they have a mirror) or maybe even a different port.

Good luck! I'm bailing to Surewest.. tired of these jokers. 3Gb is INSANE. you can hit that in 20-25 min on a solid 10Mbps line and then you're screwed for a day

kamidake55

@wavecable.com

Also, I forgot to point out.. the 3GB is for ALL traffic to any host, not just usenet. Includes HTTP, FTP, SSH, etc.

Wave is currently trying to roll out 16Mbps within 2 months to their markets. And their solution isn't to add more backbone bandwidth, but to just throttle people.

Also confirmed by Wave, throttling isn't turned on in all markets yet, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

We are in the process of adding additional backbone capacity slated for the first few weeks of January per our circuit provider. We have grown faster than we expected on our high speed data product in the Sacramento region. Please hang tight as we try to expedite our circuit provider to add capacity expansion for the area.

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

I would confirm this is what I was told, I am a user, the supervisor confirmed they have a "new circuit" going online in the next few weeks and alledgedly a speed increase coming in the near future.

luluddd

So...ssctv...you sound like a Wave rep. (I am in Rocklin) Should I bother to have a repair person come out to check my line and connection info or should I just wait until mid January if the additional backbone capacity will bring the speed back to what I am paying for ?

Also, if Wave is indeed having growth issues...why would a download from Microsoft move along at 500K while at the same time one form Easy News is moving at 75K. I know its not EN's servers cause they were plenty fast a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the help

LULUDDD,

Please IM me the CMAC number from your cable modem and i'll take a look.

I'm getting throttled too and I'm in the Auburn area. This is stupid and yet I'm paying $65 a month.

Get it together Wave.

Ryanwa,

Please PM me more information on what you are experiencing so I can take a look.

Thanks

kamidake5

@wavecable.com

ssctv, I want to know why Wave lies to their customers. I am waiting for 4-5 callbacks, and one was supposed to be from a manager. They keep saying it's not their issue and supervisors continue to refuse to talk to me. But I'm a Senior Network Engineer and I've been in the internet service industry for over a decade. I know traffic shaping when I see it.

I probably wouldn't have been so angry if they just said, yes we are shaping your connection because our bandwidth is saturated. Give us until January and everything will be restored.

But I believe Wave is only buying 10Mbps of additional backbone so I'm not sure that is going to help much.

luluddd, the reason you easy news is slow is because usenet can eat a lot bandwidth very quickly. With their backbone issues, they need to throttle usenet entirely or have a 3Gig daily limit. Yes, you are paying a lot, and No it isn't worth it.

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

I agree. Who wants to spend that type of money on a connection is you can't even use it to its full potential.

The reason some of us have the top package is because we need the constant speed. Being capped two hours into internet use it not right.

I have netflix and I stream my movies from their site - my capped connection is not even close to being sufficient for that.

kamidake55

@wavecable.com
ryanwa, can you even make it through one netflix HD streaming video? You'll probably get put in bandwidth jail for doing that LOL

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

Actually it's not too bad. Very rarely does it stop to buffer, I think it's only done it once in the 10+ HD movies I've watched.

Now I can't even watch normal SD movies.

I had to test this alleged 3GB cap thingy.

Here's a screen at 6 gigs into a 7 gig download at full speed at primetime during a snow event with the neighborhood bunkered down in front of their PCs.

No cappage here in Port Orchard, WA. Nor have I ever seen a cap. I pray Wave doesn't go that route or I'll take my plan down to bare bones, or quit altogether.

Perhaps if we get enough people to take their package down to almost the bare minimum then Wave will rethink this cap. I know four people, me being number five that are prepared to do this.

IF they are going to do a temporary cap, it should be during selected hours such as 7am-9pm or something. Then after that everyone should get their full speed.

kamidake55

@wavecable.com

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

That's a good idea ryanwa. I am going to call wave tomorrow and lower my account down to 1.5Mbps. Why am I paying 65 if I am only getting 1.5? Might as well save my cash

Demon5

@starstream.net

This confirms what is happening to me. I am also in Rocklin here. been going on for weeks now and wave says they can send a tech out to my house in a couple weeks to check my stuff here. I have full gigabit on my lan going between systems. Yet at about the same time as you people are saying bandwidth wise it suddenly drops to 1.5mbit. I pay the extra money for 10mbit. Have been with starstream for over a decade. Now they do this crap to my connection and I'm currently looking for a new provider. I pay nearly 200 a month to wave. Can EASILY change my tv service and exploring options on internet

Demon5

@starstream.net

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

I have a recorded call to a tech support agent I will be posting up later. Just spent over an hour on the phone. Network Operation Center apparently confirmed that they do throttle once at 3GB download for day. and btw my line speed shot back up at 11:25pm. The guy in the noc which as tier1 tech stated was the head person in charge there flat out said no they will not remove the throttle because they plan to add a pay for bandwidth plan. So I guess they will get like phone company and charge per kilobyte of bandwidth and if I put that plan on I would end up with a thousand dollar plus bill. God I wish starstream never sold to wave. By the way I was one of the first 5 cable modem subscribers in this area.

kamidake55

@wavecable.com

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

demon5, I can't wait to hear the call lol. I've called 15 times or so and I could NEVER get a supervisor & NOC kept denying they are doing anything. But 11:25 comes and it's like magic.. come on. I'm so glad Surewest is coming out there on the 30th to put in Bonded DSL.

kamidake55

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

Meant glad my completely unthrottled/unmetered Surewest bonded DSL is coming HERE on the 30th. I wish I could go back and edit

Do you really think Starstream would miss out on this as well? When all the ISPs are doing the same thing why be left behind?

kamidake55

@wavecable.com

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

Vapid,

Who else is doing this? I know comcast has 250GB/month. But 3GB a day is only 90GB a month.... and sometimes I need to get 8-10GB a day but then wont really use my connection for a couple days.

The question is - are they doing this until mid Jan like another poster stated or is this a permanent thing?

If you are going to make an argument please educate yourself, I think you need to read up about false advertising.

If you follow this link you will see that it states "up to" before all the speeds.

This might be something to look over as well

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

I already have directv installer comming out tuesday. I will be cutting my tv service at that point. Still deciding on internet service but that will be cut VERY soon as well. I did not want to change but with the employee's that wave has and the way I was treated when I called there is NO WAY IN HELL I can continue to pay the ammount of money I currently do.

Re: WaveBroadband Torrent Throttling??!!!

And that's fine, just remember the grass is almost always greener...

I have had my fair share of problems with Wave (been with the same system as @Home was...) and I can say that it always gets better.
